WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Veronica Mars Season 4, streaming now on Hulu.

The newly-released fourth season of Veronica Mars features the shocking death of the titular detective's husband, Logan Echolls, who met his untimely end thanks to a backpack bomb left by antagonist Penn Epner. Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas has opened up about this development, revealing he views it as a gamble that will either make or break the show's prospective future.

"It feels like I placed a bet," Thomas told TV Guide. "And I may lose that bet or I may win that bet. If you never get to see another Veronica Mars episode because the fans hated it and turned on the show, then I lost the bet. If we get to do more and it becomes a long-running Veronica Mars detective series that we get to do every once in a while, then I think I won the bet."

Killing off a major character in a television show is always a big decision that is sure to evoke lots of feelings from viewers, especially longtime fans. Thomas appears to be very aware of this, and apparently hopes Veronica Mars' viewers will be clambering to see what happens next. However, he also acknowledges that the opposite could very well happen, and result in the show ended for good. As for which will come to pass, we'll simply have to wait and see.

At any rate, Veronica Mars is certainly no stranger to cancelation. The show originally aired its first two seasons on UPN, before moving to The CW for its third. The CW decided not to renew the series, which initially came to an end in 2007. Veronica Mars remained dormant until a feature film was released in 2014, which helped set the stage for Hulu reviving the series for a fourth season. Is a fifth season in the cards following Season 4's controversial death? Only time will tell.
