When the Veronica Mars film comes out March 14, it will not only debut in theaters, but will also be available for digital download on the same day.

Creator and producer Rob Thomas revealed in a Kickstarter update that "On March 14, Veronica Mars will be available to everyone, worldwide," adding that backers whose rewards include a digital copy of the film will be able to download it that day, and that "the movie will also be available to EVERYONE on March 14 through participating digital platforms, cable providers and satellite services," including iTunes and Amazon.

"... getting a movie into a theater might sound easy, but believe me: I had courtside seats this season, and it's not," Thomas wrote in the update. "Despite that, the WB Distribution team managed to get the movie into a few hundred theaters, in several countries. It's possible that we'll be able to add more theaters to that list. It's just as possible that we won't. But no matter what, we would never be able to get the movie into a theater near every backer. We wanted to. I think you know that."

The film was funded through Kickstarter after more than 91,000 backers pledged money to the project. The majority of those backers (around 65,000 if I'm doing the math right) pledged $35 or more, which means they'll receive a digital copy of the film.

"For a movie to be released in selected theaters in multiple countries and available to rent and purchase and watch on-demand worldwide, all on the same day? It's pretty much unheard of. And since everything about this movie is unprecedented, I'm pleased that our distribution plans are too," Thomas said.

Veronica Mars stars Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, Max Greenfield, Percy Daggs III, Jerry O'Connell, Francis Capra, Tina Majorino, Enrico Colantoni and James Franco. The former television series has been enjoying a renaissance on several fronts; in addition to the film, there's also a digital spinoff on CW Seed and a book series, the first being Veronica Mars: The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line. Entertainment Weekly debuted the cover for it earlier today.
