One of the most popular and bizarre elements of the Marvel Universe is the Venom symbiote. The alien entity can possess people and give them powers in the process. The alien can shift from host to host and has managed to become entangled with multiple character over the years, most notably Spider-Man.

However, the symbiote has also bonded with Deadpool on a few different occasions to form Venompool. Now, CBR is taking a look back at the history of this dark unoin and breaking down some of Venompool's most notable moments.

VENOMPOOL'S ORIGIN

The idea of Deadpool combining with Venom first appeared during the 2011 volume of What Ifas a recurring back-up story in the multiverse exploring series,. At the end of every issue in the miniseries, Rick Remender and Shawn Moll's  story continued showing an Earth where Wade Wilson was hired to kill (but ended up befriending) the Beyonder. When Spider-Man confronted the Beyonder about removing the Venom symbiote, the two were separated and Wade ended up combining with the symbiote while Peter Parker fell to his death.

Venompool went off on his own for a time, trying (and failing) to become a hero and pulling villainous acts, namely, ransoming a drunk Tony Stark to AIM for a check. He ultimately made a name for himself by managing to save the Earth by using the Recton Expungifier (a device given to him that was capable of destroying the Beyonder) to kill the Beyonder and the figure who gave it to him in the first place, Galactus.

VENOMPOOL VS EVERYTHING

Despite being one of the most famous heroes on his Earth, Venompool couldn't shake the admiration paid to other heroes. Deciding that he needed to be the most popular and beloved figure on the planet, Venompool actually ended up targeting all the heroes and the villains around the Marvel Universe, killing almost all of them in the process.

Eventually coming to terms with his failings, Venompool was given the chance to save himself and the world he lived on. Instead, he decides to give into his darker impulses and kill himself (and the entire universe around him) with the Recton Expungifier.

His original appearance in the Marvel multiverse was more concerned with subverting the concept than having straight fun with it (although the character's sentient Jheri Curl is proof that he was at least partly a joke.)

Instead, he's a version of Deadpool who had his worst impulses amplified, including his jealous nature, to the point where he stopped being fun and just started being mean, which was the original intended ending for the character.

VENOMPOOL IN CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS AND BEYOND

Venompool

Just like both characters that make up the fusion, nothing seems to keep Venompool down for long. Marvel's Deadpool briefly combined with Venom (and had a hand  in creating the general instability of the symbiote)  during the Secret Wars tie-in, Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars, by Cullen Bunn and Matteo Lolli.

A different version of Venompool appeared in the Venomverse event, and this version of the character ended up playing a vital role in the story-arc as one of the only characters able to retain their identity after being exposed to the intergalactic force known as the Poisons.

Venompool has even made the leap outside of comics, appearing as one of the characters in the mobile Marvel game, Contest of Champions. Despite the short life of the original character and his intended send off, there's just something fascinating about combining two of the craziest Marvel characters together.
