Following news that Sony's Venom will be PG-13, director Ruben Fleischer has teased the possibility of an unrated version for home release.

Speaking with Fandango, Fleischer cited the horror works of David Cronenberg and John Carpenter as influences on the tone of the film. Understandably, that result is that Venom appears considerably darker than standard superhero fare, with a title character that goes so far as to threaten to eat someone's head in the trailers.

However, ultimately Sony opted for a PG-13 rating, a decision reportedly made so as not to preclude Venom from eventually crossing over with Spider-Man, or even some other Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, down the road.

But Fleischer isn't willing to say an unrated version of Venom won't be released eventually, say, on Blu-ray and DVD. “I wouldn't rule anything out," he told Fandango. "We'll have to see where it lands, I guess, but I wouldn't rule anything out.”

Venom, starring Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road), Michelle Williams (The Greatest Showman), Riz Ahmed (Rouge One: A Star Wars Story), Jenny Slate (The Gifted), Woody Harrelson (Zombieland), Scott Haze (Child of God), Reid Scott (Veep), Sope Aluko (Joy), and Michelle Lee (Check Point), will be released in Oct. 5.
