2018's Venom was a massive box office smash that surpassed the $855-million mark worldwide, so it's no surprise that it was green-lit for a sequel. Slated for a 2020 release, Venom 2's plot is still under wraps, but Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, and Woody Harrelson are all set to reprise their roles.

While we still know very little about the film, rumor has it that the sequel's storyline might include Shriek as a potential villain. Though the casting process is still underway and nothing is set in stone yet, Naomie Harris (Moonlight, 007 franchise) is reportedly in early negotiations for the role. Here are 10 facts to know about Shriek before the movie's release.

10 She Had A Rough Childhood

Frances Louise Barrison (named Sandra Deel in earlier appearances) was abused by her own mother for being an overweight child. This horrible childhood drove her to a life riddled with drugs and an obsession with motherhood and having her own family. She eventually became a drug dealer, which made her susceptible to dangerous situations that marred her sanity.

After being shot in the head by a police officer, Barrison was placed in Cloak's Darkforce Dimension, a powerful otherworldly energy that can be manipulated by specific beings. This is where her dormant mutant powers were awakened and Shriek as we know her was born.

9 Carnage Freed Her

Shriek made her big debut during the Maximum Carnage crossover in 1993. Carnage (Cletus Kasady) orchestrated a destructive escape from the Ravencroft mental institution where Shriek also happened to be incarcerated. She convinced him to release her and the duo embarked on a mass killing spree.

Along the way, they attracted the attention of a few other bloodthirsty villains: Carrion, Demogoblin, and Doppelganger. Carrion was created by the fusion of a genetic replicator virus and human DNA. Demogoblin was a demonic creature with supernatural powers. Doppelganger was an evil, brutish duplicate of Spider-Man created by Magus during the Infinity War.

8 She Created The Carnage Family

Shriek's awful childhood led to an infatuation with the concept of having her own family. She adopted Carnage as her husband and together they played "parents" to their "sons", which were the aforementioned Carrion and Demogoblin. Doppelganger became their adopted "pet".

She basically formed a makeshift "family" out of her clan of homicidal villains. Carnage, who was just as mentally unstable as Barrison, happily complied with the dysfunctional family set-up. The Carnage Family massacred hundreds of people and terrorized many parts of New York City until they were confronted by Spider-Man, Venom and several other superheroes. Spoiler alert: the Carnage Family was eventually defeated.

7 She Can Manipulate Minds

Shriek is capable of tapping into people's minds and exposing their inner darkness, which includes feelings of hatred, fear, and anger. She can perceive the darkest parts of someone's psyche and use her abilities to manipulate those specific emotions.

Shriek used these powers to make New Yorkers turn on each other, causing them to behave in an irrationally violent manner. In this scenario, superheroes were able to dispel the chaos before things got too drastic — in other words before any children were killed. Shriek's scarred left eye tends to glow whenever she uses her abilities, but the reason is unclear.

6 She Can Manipulate Sound

As her name insinuates, Shriek can harness the power of sound and use it for destructive purposes while also disorienting and irritating her foes. Her most popular physical attack involves shooting sonic energy blasts from her hands. In terms of defense, she can manipulate sound to shield herself with a sonic field.

Her sonic abilities can also intertwine with her mind manipulation skills. Shriek can hypersonically intensify emotions within anyone around her. This helps her generate feelings of despair and hatred that lead to violent behavior and utter mayhem. She can also use sound to levitate or make herself fly.

5 In-Fighting Tore The Carnage Family Apart

Shriek and her band of murderous criminals eventually came face to face with characters like Spider-Man, Venom, Black Cat, and Iron Fist. The heroes posed a major threat to the Carnage Family, but it was the strain within the group that ultimately ruined them.

Doppelganger sacrificed himself to save Shriek's life after Carnage attacked her for being too rebellious. It didn't help that Carrion apparently rid himself of the virus inside of him and Demogoblin wished to atone for his villainous ways. Shriek followed suit and decided to leave her messy family antics behind. She was returned to Ravencroft after Maximum Carnage.

4 She Almost Made Spider-Man Her "Husband"

At some point in the comics, Shriek determined that Spider-Man would make an excellent father figure for Carrion. She sensed a burgeoning darkness within him and decided that he should take the place of Carnage in their "family".

This plan fell apart when Shriek took Carrion to visit his birth mother (Beatrice McBride) in hopes that he would kill her. Spider-Man intervened and was attacked by a confused Carrion while he tried to save his mother. McBride begged Spider-Man to stop beating her son and he complies. That's when Shriek notices that the Spider could never replace Carnage and injures him with a sonic blast.

3 She Created Scorn

In the Brand New Day storyline, Hall Industries purchased Ravencroft in an attempt to use Shriek as a power source for the Carnage symbiote that had been separated from Cletus Kasady. She snaps and becomes a violent maniac again, Cletus reunites with his symbiote, and Shriek gains additional powers from another symbiote created by Carnage.

However, this new symbiote grows uneasy within Shriek and leaves her for her therapist, Doctor Tanis Nieves. Thus, Scorn is born and forces Shriek to weaken Carnage, granting Spider-Man and Iron Man the opportunity to defeat him. Later on, Shriek appears to be in a coma after Scorn had dealt some damage to her brain.

2 She Has Been Associated With Other Supervillain Teams

The Carnage Family wasn't the only team of villains that Shriek was associated with. She was recruited by Caroline le Fay to join the Doom Maidens, a group of female villains that included members like Anaconda, Scorpia, and Mindblast. Shriek was also a part of the Sinister Sixteen assembled by Boomerang, meant to be a larger version of the Sinister Six team. This unit was comprised of villains like Beetle, Cyclone, Overdrive, and Scorcher.

These alliances could prove fruitful if the Venom sequels decide to explore a greater net of villains. Shriek would make an even more formidable enemy when paired with a group of evildoers.

1 She Was Briefly Rehabilitated

In the 2010 Carnage series, Shriek underwent intensive therapy and it seemed to actually work. Sure, she continued to obsess over Carnage, so that aspect of her mind remained stubbornly intact. However, her murderous tendencies had vanished (or at least been subdued) and she cooperated with her therapist.

This is evidence that Shriek isn't beyond saving and that she could potentially be fully rehabilitated. A story arc like this is plausible for a franchise like the Venom films. The "bad guy gone good" narrative seems right up their alley, but we'll just have to wait for further news or an official synopsis.
