Star Tom Hardy has unveiled the latest trailer for Venom that places the alien symbiote's unsettling tentacle-like tongue front and center.

Interestingly, this image dials back on the strands of saliva that were so prominent in the earlier Japanese poster. The teeth also are less-pronounced, suggesting Sony Pictures may be toning down some of the film's horror elements for marketing in North America.

With less than a month until the Oct. 5 release of director Ruben Fleischer's Venom, the studio is ramping up the promotional campaign, with TV spots, the release of the first song off the soundtrack, and undoubtedly even more posters. Early tracking places the film on a path to breaking an October box-office record with a potential domestic opening weekend of somewhere between $55 million and $85 million.

Sony has a lot riding on the success of Venom, not only in recouping its investment but also in finally launching its long-planned cinematic universe starring ancillary Spider-Man characters, like Black Cat, Silver Sable, Morbius the Living Vampire and Kraven the Hunter.

Swinging into theaters on Oct. 5, Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer and stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, and Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake/Riot.
