If you were disappointed that the new Venom trailer isn’t quite horrifying enough in its depiction of the alien symbiote, then Sony Pictures Japan has the movie poster for you.
Released in conjunction with the new footage, the image allows fans to stare into Venom’s gaping maw, filled with rows of enormous, razor-sharp teeth, and a far too long tentacle-like tongue. And then there are the unavoidable strands of saliva.
If you can tear your eyes away from all the terrors contained within the symbiote’s mouth, the image also provides the most detailed look yet at its Venom skin, with black, alien ooze dripping across an enormous eye that isn’t a solid field of white but instead a milky smoke or fog. It also highlights the web of white veins coursing across the creature’s body, which serves as a replacement of sorts for the traditional white spider symbol from the comics.
“If you look at the comics, in Venom, there is just elements of white within his suit,” director Ruben Fleischer explained earlier this month at Comic-Con International in San Diego. “Because our character does not originate from Spider-Man, it makes no sense to put a spider on his chest. We tried to be as accurate as we possibly could, even though some people feel it’s inaccurate, but there is a lot of white and we wanted to give him a distinctive pattern.”
Swinging into theaters on Oct. 5, Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer and stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, and Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake/Riot.
