The set photo shows Hardy in what appears to be military gear, which isn't part of his character's traditional backstory. In Marvel Comics lore, Eddie Brock was a journalist and rival of Peter Parker before coming into contact with the Venom symbiote. However, the inclusion of a military history may indicate that this version of Brock will share some commonalities with Flash Thompson.

After years of playing Peter Parker's bully in high school, Flash resurfaced as an Iraq War veteran who lost his legs in battle. He was introduced to the Venom symbiote and became Agent Venom for several years. The popularity of the character may have provided filmmakers with inspiration.
