WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Venom #25's story "Paradise Interrupted" by David Michelinie, Ron Lim, J.P. Mayer, Erick Arciniega, and VC's Clayton Cowles, available now.

While the name Venom might be ubiquitous to the character, Eddie Brock and his symbiote only took that name due to the venomous influence Spider-Man had on both of their lives. Eddie blamed Spider-Man for his failed journalism career, with his tabloid articles serving little more than venom to the general populous, and Spider-Man scorned his symbiote repeatedly by rejecting it, thus proving a venomous, intoxicating influence on the alien lifeform.

However, early in Venom's career as a villain, there was a period in Venom's life where he believed himself to be rid of Spider-Man forever and lived alone on an island. This brief period of time on the island was cut short when Spider-Man returned to Eddie's life with news of the Carnage symbiote. But as Venom #25 reveals, Eddie almost went by a different name for that brief period of time: Vengeance.

Venom Vengeance

The Amazing Spider-Man #345-347, by David Michelinie and Erik Larsen, established the foundation for Venom's tropical tales. Venom managed to drug and kidnap Spider-Man and put him on a tropical island so he could defeat him in a fair battle. The island had once been used for a mining operation before being abandoned.

During Venom's hunt for Spider-Man, Spider-Man realized there was flammable gas in the underground mines in the island. Spider-Man managed to fake his own death by exploding said gas and placing his torn-up costume on top of a skeleton he found in the mines. This managed to convince Venom that he had finally succeeded in his goals, which convinced Eddie he could retire to paradise, feeling no need to ever be Venom ever again.

The back-up story of Venom #25 fills readers in on what Venom was up to while he was living on an island paradise. In between raiding ruined shacks for peaches, Venom managed to stop a group of criminals stealing explosive weaponry from the US military. Venom slaughtered them all one by one, forcing one of them to blow up their arsenal of explosives using symbiotic tendrils to aim their weapons elsewhere.

However, before going off to save the day, Venom tries to find a new name for himself. Eddie and the symbiote undergo a back-and-forth on what V-name they could apply to themselves, with the symbiote pitching names to Eddie only for him to reject them out of turn. After debating the names Vulnerable, Venison and Venus, Eddie and the symbiote ultimately agree on the name Vengeance.

The reason for this entire debate is that Eddie and the symbiote believed themselves to be rid of the venom that had driven them to villainy in the first place since the source of their pain, Spider-Man, had been seemingly purged from their life. The name ultimately didn't stick because Spider-Man, still alive, would later travel to the island with the Human Torch to convince Venom to help him put down Carnage. This cut Vengeance's career short but ensured that fans would be able to see Venom for years to come.
