An official clip for Sony's Venom: Let There Be Carnage makes it clear that the villain Shriek's sound-based powers are not to be taken lightly.

In the clip, posted to YouTube by Bloody Disgusting, an incarcerated Shriek (played by Naomie Harris) sits in what appears to be a soundproof cell as a group of orderlies bring her food. We see the great lengths they go to in order to protect their ears before entering the cell. However, the deafening silence is ultimately broken by Shriek chomping at one of the orderlies, with the sound apparently strong enough to breach the multiple layers of protection.

Created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Lim, the character of Frances Louise Barrison/Shriek first appeared in 1993's Spider-Man Unlimited #1. Shriek is perhaps best known for her role in the "Maximum Carnage" story arc, in which she and her love interest, Cletus Kasady/Carnage, served as "parents" to fellow villains Doppelganger, Demogoblin and Carrion. While Carnage's so-called "sons" actually hated him, they stayed in the group out of their devotion to Shriek.

In the original Marvel comic books, Shriek is a mutant who gained the ability to manipulate sound after being exposed to Cloak's Darkforce Dimension. In addition to being able to use sound as a concussive weapon, she can also use it to disorient her adversaries. In the comics, Shriek also posses a few psychic powers, including mild levitation and the ability to manipulate emotions. Whenever Shriek uses her powers, her scarred left eye begins to glow.

Let There Be Carnage marks Shriek's live-action debut. However, the character has previously appeared in the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man vs. the Sinister Six. She also appeared in the 1994 video game Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage and the 2007 video game adaptation of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3. In the Spider-Man 3 game, Shriek is married to Michael Morbius. Of course, the Living Vampire is himself getting a solo film at Sony. Starring Jared Leto in the lead role, Morbius is currently scheduled to release in theaters on Jan. 28, 2022.

Directed by Andy Serkis, Let There Be Carnage is the sequel to 2018's Venom, which was directed by Ruben Fleischer. The new film rejoins Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), who is struggling to adjust to his life as Venom's host. Worse yet, Eddie's plan to revitalize his journalism career by interviewing notorious serial killer Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) goes awry when Kasady bonds to Venom's spawn, Carnage.
