Marvel Comics has announced King in Black, the next installment of writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Stegman's Venom saga that sees Knull, God of the Symbiotes, invade the Marvel Universe.

The event teases heroes such as the Avengers and X-Men coming together to stand against Knull, with Eddie Brock's climactic standoff with the terrifying villain looming in the background.

"As far as event books go, this is the coolest, darkest, most heavy metal, Cthulhu dark horror thing I've ever been able to do," Cates said. “I still can’t believe that Marvel is letting us go as dark and scary as we’re going."

"One of the things I’m most proud of in this series… is the creation of the character Knull," Stegman added. "We have some new designs that we’ll be unveiling throughout the series that are really cool and really creepy."

King in Black looks to be a successor to Absolute Carnage, which resulted in Eddie Brock and Venom releasing Knull from his cosmic prison, with the villain now making his way towards Earth for revenge. Recent issues of Venom featured the "Venom Island" story arc, with Eddie turning to the Avengers for help and finally admitting to Earth's Mightiest Heroes that Knull is heading their way. Marvel's Spider-Man/Venom FCBD title, which will be released July 22, will theoretically set up this upcoming blockbuster event series.
