While the character of Venom didn't fully appear in the comics until 1988's Amazing Spider-Man #300 by David Micheline and Todd McFarlane, he quickly became one of Spider-Man's most popular villains turned anti-heroes and began to frequently appear both inside and outside of comics much more than other established Marvel characters.

Eddie Brock/Venom's multiple appearances in other mediums range from animated to live-action adaptations that include a successful solo film that paved the way for the highly anticipated sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage. While fans are waiting for the potentially epic sequel, it's a great time to look back at the best and the worst from Venom outside of the comics.

12 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

Venom cameos in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Given the unique nature of the character, an appearance by the Venom symbiote doesn't always include the main host Eddie Brock, as evidenced by the blink and you'll miss it cameo from the symbiote in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The cameo actually came in two parts, as eagle-eyed viewers can view a file on Oscorp's database labeled "Venom Storage," which was only briefly seen as a floating symbiote orb alongside a collection of other villain's gear in an early trailer before it was replaced in the final film.

11 Phineas And Ferb: Mission Marvel (2013)

Venom, MODOK, Whiplash and Red Skull in Phineas and Ferb

The Marvel Universe crossed over with the animated Disney universe in Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel, which brought the adventuring brothers together with some of Marvel's greatest heroes to combat the combined menace of mad scientist Dr. Doofenshmirtz and some of Marvel's worst villains.

Venom (voiced by Danny Trejo) appeared alongside villains like Red Skull, Whiplash, and M.O.D.O.K., and while the series visually adapted the character well, he lost some of his usual comic menaces during musical numbers like "My Evil Buddies And Me."

10 Spider-Man Unlimited (1999-2001)

Spider-Man Vs. Venom in Spider-Man Unlimited animated series

Fox Kids released a unique take on the friendly neighborhood web-slinger in Spider-Man Unlimited, which rocketed Spider-Man across the universe to Counter-Earth as he donned a high-tech costume to follow the reimagined Venom and Carnage.

After abandoning/merging with their hosts, the symbiotes fell under the control of a symbiotic hive mind called the Synoptic that unlocked new forms and abilities with the symbiotes as they headed to Counter-Earth. The modified Venom symbiote (voiced by Brian Drummond) featured heavily in the first season, though the series was cancelled on a cliffhanger.

9 Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Venom Spider-Man 3

The first live-action appearance of Venom occurred in Sam Raimi's 2007 Spider-Man 3, which starred Topher Grace as Eddie Brock that loosely adapted the character's comic origins as he bonded with the Venom symbiote due to shared anger towards Peter Parker.

The symbiote's origins more closely followed the animated version introduced in the '90s, though the overall design of the Black Suit Spider-Man and Venom's appearance in his final form along with Grace's performance was underwhelming and largely derided by fans.

8 Avengers Assemble (2013-2019)

Venom Dracula in Avengers Assemble

The Venom symbiote briefly appeared in the long-running Avengers Assemble series during the Secret Wars season, which saw the Beyonder create his Battleworld in order to test the heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe.

The Venom symbiote arrived from a crashed satellite in Iron Fist's city of K'un L'un before it found Dracula (voiced by Corey Burton) and bonded with the undead villain. The symbiote merged with Dracula resulted in powerful new abilities and a merged vampiric form, though Iron Fist was able to separate them before the bond became permanent.

7 Guardians of the Galaxy (2015 - )

Venom in Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel's animated Guardians of the Galaxy series crossed over with Spider-Man: Maximum Venom following the earlier introduction of the Venom symbiote that tied into the alien's Klyntar origins and introduced a new version of the Carnage symbiote that bonded with Thanos.

A sample of the Venom symbiote was released during Spider-Man and the Guardians' battle with Thanos-Carnage and bonded with Spider-Man, though Thanos' manipulation released Venom and turned him into a powerful symbiote bomb before the Guardians were able to use it to trap Thanos.

Adi Shankar was the producer of a number of unofficial films that became known as the Bootleg Universe that explored characters like the Power Rangers, Punisher, and Venom with the Truth In Journalism short film by director Joe Lynch.

Ryan Kwanten starred as a somewhat deranged Eddie Brock in a documentary-style short film inspired by Belgian film Man In Dog. The documentary crew followed the investigative reporter on a day in his life as he hunted stories while acting as a lethal protector in New York, before violently turning on the crew as Venom.

5 Marvel's Spider-Man (2017 - )

Spider-Man: Maximum Venom

The Venom symbiote played a large role in Disney XD's Marvel's Spider-Man after it first appeared as an alien sample called V-252 before bonding with both Spider-Man and Flash Thompson, though it was finally named Venom after bonding with Eddie Brock (voiced by Ben Pronsky).

After genetic experimentation resulted in the symbiote's own form without a host (voiced by Benjamin Diskin) it activated a beacon to call the Klyntar race to Earth, though the symbiotes were ultimately defeated. Venom visually resembles the edgier comic version that featured the extended spider symbol first worn when Mac Gargan/Scorpion bonded with the symbiote.

4 Ultimate Spider-Man (2012-2017)

Ultimate Spider-Man vs Venom and Agent Venom

DisneyXD's Ultimate Spider-Man animated series blended the mainstream comic universe and the Ultimate line of comics that modernized the characters in a kid-friendly adaptation that followed the Ultimate universe's premise for the Venom symbiote with some alterations.

Doctor Octopus was now the creator of the symbiote, and it moved through a number of characters including Spider-Man, Harry Osborn, Green Goblin and even Hulk And The Agents of S.M.A.S.H. before finally bonding with Flash Thompson (voiced by Matt Lanter) to become Agent Venom.

3 Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1994-1998)

Venom in Spider-Man: The Animated Series

Spider-Man: The Animated Series' introduction of Venom left a lasting mark on the character as "The Alien Costume" episodes featured a new origin that avoided the complicated Secret Wars based origins of the comic costume.

The symbiote was brought back to Earth by John Jameson, though it escaped when the shuttle crashed and found Spider-Man, who rejected eventually rejected its attempts to bond. The symbiote then bonded with disgruntled ex-reporter Eddie Brock (voiced by Hank Azaria) in what has now become the most recognized origin story for the symbiote.

2 Venom (2018)

Venom and Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) bond in the Venom movie.

Tom Hardy starred as Eddie Brock in Ruben Fleischer's 2018 Venom, which introduced a version of the character that was independent of the comic book connection to Spider-Man, due to the ongoing partnership with Marvel Studios.

Venom merged elements of the Lethal Protector storyline with Spider-Man: TAS's retooled origin to kickstart the anti-hero's own potential cinematic franchise. Visually, this is the best live-action version of Venom that has been seen on the big screen, despite the lack of the comics' usual white spider insignia that fans are still hoping to see in the sequel.

1 The Spectacular Spider-Man (2008-2009)

Spectacular Spider-Man vs Venom

KidsWB's The Spectacular Spider-Man took the opposite direction of 2018's Venom and integrated Eddie Brock (voiced by Benjamin Diskin) more into young Peter Parker's life as his long-time family friend, which was reminiscent of their relationship in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics.

This made Eddie Brock's transformation into the powerful Venom even more impactful than previous adaptations and featured a stylized but comics-faithful adaptation of his look. Spectacular Spider-Man gave fans some of the best Spider-Man vs. Venom fight scenes that were tragically cut short by the cancelation of the series.
