For the past few years, Venom's web has gotten more tangled than ever. The true origins of the symbiote species have been revealed, with Eddie Brock and his other half facing their alien creator. While the stories have definitely been exciting and unique, things may have gone a bit too far for the antihero.

Like the arachnid superhero he once fought still is, Venom used to be a fairly street-level character. Of course, that's changed dramatically ever since the introduction of the King in Black, and now things are simply too cosmic, even for a symbiote. Though outright character regression isn't advised, a return to basics might be what's best for Venom.

Marvel Made Venom too Cosmic

Knull God Of Symbiotes sits on his throne in Venom comics

Donny Cates' run on Venom was well-received, and it served as a return to form for the character and its property. It's inarguable that for those who grew up with Eddie Brock as Venom, the years since he had been separated from the symbiote made the character less readily accessible. Brock's return to form and the quality of the stories themselves turned this around, especially with how much it broadened his horizons. Once a Lethal Protector obsessed with protecting the innocent, Venom's ambitions now involved fighting against Knull, the evil god of the symbiotes.

Now, Eddie has defeated Knull and taken on the role of the King in Black. Connected to every symbiote, he also shares the Venom "title" with his son Dylan. Their parallel stories are meant to provide the best of both worlds, with Eddie dealing with more cosmic nuances while Dylan learns the ropes in more down to Earth adventures. Unfortunately, it resulted in a somewhat confused narrative that's taken the character away from where he started, and it's only exacerbated another major problem.

Venom Does Not Need the King in Black Mantle

Eddie Brock becoming the King in Black only added more problems to his life and the fact that his stories are just as complicated doesn't help. The title and its powers were simply too much of a narrative dead end, and having to split the Venom title's scope between Eddie and his son (one of whom is involved in all manner of esoteric meanderings) is proof of that. With Eddie now nearing the end of being the King in Black, a good direction would be for him to circumvent this path by closing that chapter for good.

Doing so would rid the book and the character of their cosmic nature. While there's room for growth and change in comics, doing something that feels completely at odds with where a property began can be problematic. Another big issue with the Venom mythos at the moment is that there are simply too many symbiotes, perhaps by giving up the King in Black title and its powers, Eddie could somehow destroy the excessive amount of symbiotes. Such an action would provide drama and a new direction for the title, all while returning to the original Venom's roots.
