WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Venom #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Eddie Brock has taken on plenty of different roles throughout his long history in the Marvel Universe. From disgraced reporter to Lethal Protector, Eddie is familiar with the burdens that come with power. Now that he has become the new King in Black, the former Venom has more power than any of his previous titles have carried. And in Venom #1 (by Al Ewing, Ram V, Bryan Hitch, Andrew Currie, Alex Sinclair, and VC's Clayton Cowles) Eddie discovers that his power may come at a much higher cost than he expected.

Ever since ascending to the throne of King in Black, Eddie Brock's life has been nonstop, due in no small part to his now nearly omnipresent nature. While Eddie has been busy meeting with the Avengers and conducting interstellar expeditions with the Guardians of the Galaxy, things on the home front have been suffering. His son Dylan has recently started displaying a mean streak that has gotten him into a world of trouble at school. Despite the presence of the various symbiotes that have become a part of his life, Dylan is still at a loss when it comes to expressing his feelings to his father, who now appears to have time for everyone except his son.

Over the past few years, Eddie and Dylan have gone from barely knowing one another to having the kind of relationship neither of them ever expected. They each suffered from neglectful and abusive childhoods that left them with deep-seated trust and anger issues.

It wasn't until after the two had been ripped away to an alternate reality that they were finally able to find peace together. Much of this was thanks to the Anne Weying of that other world, who in their reality was Eddie's deceased ex-wife and Dylan's mother. After helping Anne in her fight against the dark forces of her world, the three were able to spend a short amount of time together, forging much-needed familial connections in the process. Unfortunately, things have changed since Eddie and Dylan returned to their own world and the elder Brock took up his new position after the defeat of Knull, the first King in Black. This has resulted in Eddie not being around when his son needs him, leading Dylan to begin a journey down a dark road.

Although both Eddie and his son have emerged from their recent battles stronger than they have ever been before, Dylan still feels the need for his father's presence to help him through his trials. Likewise, Eddie is struggling to juggle his new power and responsibility with being a present father to his son.

Although they have far to go before they can reclaim the connection they once enjoyed together, it is at least reassuring that Eddie is aware of how distant his duties as King in Black have left him from his son. With reasonable effort from both father and son, it might not be too late for them to reestablish their bond and come back together again as a family.
