The second theatrical trailer for Sony Pictures' Venom has reportedly exceeded the number of views accumulated by the record-breaking trailer for Wonder Woman.
Within 24 hours, the second trailer for the Tom Hardy-led Marvel Comics-based film amassed over 64.3 million views; it currently sits at 124.7 million views. The trailer, which debuted the Venom costume, dropped Monday at Las Vegas' CinemaCon. In addition to the trailer, Sony released a teaser poster boasting the face of Hardy's Eddie Brock juxtaposed alongside the smiling symbiote mask.
According to TheWrap, the second Venom trailer's views went up 72 per cent over the first trailer, which simply teased the presence of the Venom symbiote, without actually showing it. Additionally, "positive conversation" surrounding the film was up 46 per cent, as "negative conversation" went down 63 per cent. The site notes that the positive audience reaction to the second trailer was similar to that for Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man.
Venom follows journalist Eddie Brock as he reports on the machinations of Carlton Drake’s Life Foundation and stumbles upon a conspiracy that lands him in possession of one of Drake’s symbiotes. Granting him superpowers (and a new voice in his head), Brock and the symbiote -- named Venom -- seek to expose the truth about Drake's experiments on human subjects while fending off the Life Foundation's hunt to take back the symbiote.
Arriving in theaters Oct. 5, Venom stars Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, Scott Haze and Reed Scott.
