A new promo for Venom: Let There Be Carnage highlights a possible connection between Sony's antihero and the company's Spider-Man films.The promo focuses on the central conflict between Eddie Brock/Venom (Tom Hardy) and Cletus Kasady/Carnage (Woody Harrelson), along with giving a look at Naomie Harris/Shriek. It also includes the cryptic narration, "The universe is expanding," along with Eddie telling his symbiotic counterpart, "There's something way bigger happening than you and me." It's all punctuated by a shot of Kasady swatting at a spider. All of these could be hints that Let There Be Carnage is set to meld the franchise's continuity with the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe, while also setting the stage for an inevitable conflict with Spider-Man.
Also included in the promo is a shot of Detective Mulligan (Stephen Graham) reading about Kasady's crimes in a copy of The Daily Bugle, the New York newspaper that frequently employed Peter Parker in the comics. Curiously, however, Mulligan's copy is patterned more on the traditional newspaper presented in Sony's original Spider-Man trilogy, rather than the podcast format introduced during the credits of Spider-Man: Far From Home.
This isn't the first time a crossover between the Venom movies and the MCU has been teased. A picture recently surfaced of Hardy wearing what appeared to be a baseball cap with the logo for Spider-Man: No Way Home on it. Director Andy Serkis has promised that a confrontation between the web-slinger and his darker counterpart is coming. "It's going to happen, the question is when," Serkis said. "We don't want to rush it."
Serkis elaborated on why Venom has yet to meet Spider-Man, saying, "Look, it depends when you want to get there and also what the appetite is. If people want more Venom stories, then to jump straight to Spider-Man, you could be missing out on so many great supervillain characters between now and then." He added, "Point taken, yes, everybody wants to see Venom fight Spider-Man. So I think, again, it's appetite...they'll be sacrificing all of that stuff if they want to rush to that."
Outside of teasers for the MCU, the new promo also hypes up the threat Carnage represents to the eponymous antihero. Hardy was eager to praise Harrelson's performance as Carnage, calling him "deliciously wicked" and adding that "...[Harrelson is] such an amazing joy, isn't he? He's a brilliant team player as well. He's fantastic. He's awesome."
Venom: Let There Be Carnage will hit theaters exclusively on Oct. 1.
