Despite a number of Spider-Man Easter eggs, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is not set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Director Andy Serkis spoke to IGN about the release of the Venom 2 trailer and all of the secrets his directorial debut holds. When asked if the new Sony film will take place in the MCU given the appearance of Daily Bugle papers in the trailer, Serkis confirmed that it will be set in its own world—albeit with nods to the source material.

"Obviously, there are links between Venom and Spider-Man and the Marvel Universe and the Spider-Man story," Serkis said. "We're treating this very much as it's his own world. The Venom story is his own world. There are nods and little moments [like the shot of the newspaper the Daily Bugle], of course, but on the whole, he's unaware. They are unaware, at this point, of other characters like Spider-Man. So, that's the way we've chosen to play this particular episode of the movie, but, well, we'll wait and see. We'll see what little things you can pick out of it."

Serkis' answer is curious, as he seems to indicate that Spider-Man and other heroes do, in fact, exist. How Eddie Brock would be unaware of them given the number of times that the Avengers have saved the world seems downright impossible. Especially, as IGN points out, since there's a mention of the Avengers in a Daily Bugle issue seen in the trailer.

Complicating matters further is Michael Keaton's presence in the Morbius trailer. While it's not confirmed that he's playing Vulture in that film, Morbius is supposedly set in the same world as the Venom films and all future movies in the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters. Serkis does, however, leave the door open, though it's doubtful that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is keen on a group of movies he has no say in appearing in the MCU. Given that, it's likely that the Venom movies will mention the popular MCU films but the MCU won't ever acknowledge the Sony-exclusive characters.
