SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, now in theaters.

A notable villain seemingly met their demise in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, but the film's director points out the death in question might not be as final as it seems.

"Well, as you and I well know, in movies, you're never dead, really," director Andy Serkis told CBR when asked if Cletus Kasady's love interest Frances Barrison -- aka Shriek -- was definitively dead. "Until someone screams -- which is ironic, in her case! [laughs]."

"But anyway, no," Serkis continued. "I think -- look, depending on what happens in the future, depending on the appetite for the movies, etc, etc, etc, I think there's probably a way -- there is a version where you could quite easily have her not be killed, if we wanted to go that route. [laughs]"

Shriek appeared to meet her end after falling from the top of bell tower of the cathedral where she and Kasady were planning to marry. The battle between Kasady's symbiote Carnage and Eddie Brock's own Venom, as well as Shriek's own sonic screams, dislodged the cathedral's massive bell, and if the fall alone didn't kill her, the church bell landing on top her certainly appeared to.

Escaping death is nothing new in movies, and it's certainly nothing new with comic characters. Carnage himself also was apparently killed, but the wildly popular villain could easily be brought back as well, should circumstances for future Venom, or Marvel Studios, films dictate.

Directed by Andy Serkis, Venom: Let There be Carnage is now in theaters.
