While Venom: Let There Be Carnage won't feature an appearance by Tom Holland's Spider-Man (as far as we know), the movie's director said it's in the cards.

Andy Serkis, who's taking over the Venom franchise after Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) directed the first film, was asked by IGN about the web-slinger showing up in the series. While Sony Pictures owns the rights to Spider-Man and essentially rents him out to Marvel Studios, the character has yet to pop up in the tangentially related Marvel movie universe. But will that ever change?

"Everyone wants to know when Venom is going to meet Spider-Man, personally, it's not going to happen," Serkis said. "I'm kidding. It's going to happen, the question is when. We don't want to rush it."

The deal between Disney and Sony that allowed Spider-Man to appear in the MCU provided a shot in the arm to the latter studios' efforts to turn the Marvel characters it owns into a separate universe. Venom, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics and audiences, performed well at the box office in 2018. This year will see the story continue with the introduction of Carnage and Shriek. And next year, Jared Leto's Morbius will hit screens. And the studio isn't stopping there.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson will play Kraven the Hunter, who is rumored to face off against the Chameleon. And Olivia Wilde is expected to make a Spider-Woman film for Sony. Meanwhile, numerous actors from the previous Spider-Man films are joining the MCU. J.K. Simmons' J. Jonah Jameson arrived at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, and the trailer for No Way Home brought Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus into the fold. Jamie Foxx is also set to play Electro once again, while rumors claim everyone from Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst to Thomas Hayden Church's Sandman are set to appear in the multiverse-spanning movie.

Sony has also dabbled in the multiverse with the hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, so there are numerous avenues open for Holland's wall-crawler to confront Tom Hardy's Venom. Of course, in the comics, the two characters have a deep connection that doesn't exist in the MCU, but with the birth of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse, anything is possible.
