People become superheroes for a variety of reasons. Many heroes may find themselves risking their lives for others. The value of life is only one of the reasons people become may decide to become a hero, and it isn't that surprising that some heroes may extend their love of life to their furry friends.

Some heroes have decided to include their love for and protection of life in their dietary choices, as there have been a few who have decided to forsake animal byproducts. Sometimes these heroes have become vegan for a short period of time while others have decided to make a more permanent commitment to veganism.

Greg Rucka made the decision to write Wonder Woman with a very specific diet. Diana had always shown a great love of animals and always placed great importance on life. However, after Rucka stopped working on the title, there has never been another reference to Wonder Woman's plant-based lifestyle.

Damian Wayne is the biological son of Bruce Wayne. After he goes to live with his father, he begins training as Robin. Under his father's influence, Damian slowly begins to gain a moral compass.

While the character has little appreciation for life when he's first introduced, that begins to change with time. Damian begins to amass quite the collection of animals, and he eventually decides to give up eating meat— though it's unknown if he stuck with this decision given more recent events.

8 Superman: He Could Sense The Death Of Living Things, Included Animals

Superman: Birthright was written by Mark Waid and released in 2003. The comic gave Superman the power to detect the life force leaving a person when they die, meaning he can see the death of living things. He also reveals that he feels pain in seeing these deaths.

He therefore decides to live on a plant-based diet. When the story became part of canon, Superman officially became a vegan. The comic is no longer considered canon upon the 2009 release of Superman: Secret Origin, however, and it is unknown if Superman maintains his plant-based diet (or his ability to see death).

7 Bruce Banner: Bruce May Be A Vegan, But The Hulk Isn't

Bruce Banner was a scientist that experienced some extreme changes after being exposed to Gamma radiation. Bruce gained the ability to transform into a monster-like creature called the Hulk.

Bruce and Hulk may share a body but the two are very different. Bruce Banner has been revealed to be a vegan in Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk Volume 1 #2, but it is unlikely that the Hulk abides by the same diet.

6 Thunderbird: Neal Shaara Was Raised As A Vegan In India

Neal Shaara was created by Chris Claremont and Leinil Francis Yu. He was born in India and became a member of the X-Men. He began using the name Thunderbird, though he is unrelated to the previous heroes that used that name.

He can use his powers to convert and mimic solar energy, and is able to produce a superheated plasma as well as having super strength, speed, and durability. His status as a vegan is mainly related to his upbringing as a Hindu.

5 Connor Hawke: He Is A Buddhist & A Vegan

Connor Hawke was the son of Oliver Queen and Sandra Hawke. He started off as Green Arrow's sidekick before becoming Green Arrow himself. As a Buddhist, Connor would live off a plant-based diet.

After Infinite Crisis, Connor underwent some massive changes. He was left with amnesia and completely forgot who he was, including that he was a Buddhist and a vegan. It's unknown if Connor will ever go back to the person he used to be, including returning to his old eating habits.

4 Karolina Dean: Her Love Of Animals Has Inspired Her To Become A Vegan

Karolina Dean grew up completely unaware of her alien heritage, from which her powers to manipulate solar energy derive. After discovering her parents are part of a criminal organization, she teams up with a group called the Runaways.

Karolina is a sweet girl with an incredible love of animals that causes her to be vegan, though the character has been slightly changed in being adapted for the Hulu show, The Runaways.

3 Iron Fist: His Childhood In K'un-L'un Has Influenced His Life As An Adult

After losing his parents, Danny Rand begins to live in the mystical city of K'un-L'un. He is taught to be an incredible martial artist and is given the power of the Iron Fist.

When he returns to his birthplace of New York City, he decides to become a superhero. His life in K'un-L'un continues to influence Danny. He has been depicted as a Buddhist at times, and as such, he would need to live on a plant-based diet.

2 Animal Man: His Ability To Relate To Animals Inspired Him To Become Vegan

Aliens gave Buddy Baker him the power to borrow abilities from animals. He can even borrow the abilities of extinct animals. He has been shown to have the strength of a Tyrannosaurus rex, the ability to swim like a fish, and the reflexes of a fly.

His powers have also given him the ability to empathize with animals in a unique way. His status as Animal Man has inspired him to make the decision to switch to a vegan diet.

Garfield Logan was the child of scientists. His parents worked in Africa exploring evolution and genes. After their child developed a rare illness, they decided to use their research to try and save him.

The experimental procedure saved Garfield's life, but it came with unintended side effects. His skin, eyes, and hair all turned green. He also gained the ability to turn into animals. Using the name Beast Boy, he became a superhero and a vegan.
