Harley Quinn co-creator Patrick Schumacker revealed that Sam Richardson will play a role in Season 3 of the animated series.

In an interview to promote Amazon's sci-fi action/thriller The Tomorrow War, Richardson said he would love to play X-Men's Hank McCoy/Beast, comparing him to "a big blue-haired" version of his Veep character Richard Splett. Responding on Twitter, Schumacker wrote, "I am extremely excited for this possibility and equally if not more extremely excited for the reality of [Richardson] showing up as [redacted] in [Harley Quinn Season] 3!"

Richardson's Richard Splett first appeared in Veep Season 3, starting off as a campaign aide to Julia Louis-Dreyfus's Selina Meyer and going on to become the President of the United States. The actor also voiced characters in a number of animated comedy TV shows, including Doctor Champ on BoJack Horseman and the persistently optimistic A.I.M. henchman Gary on Hulu's M.O.D.O.K. series. In addition to The Tomorrow War, Richardson will costar in the upcoming horror/comedy Werewolves Within, based on the VR video game.

The Harley Quinn voice cast began recording Season 3 in Feb. 2021, with Schumacker later teasing "a very special guest star" for the season. It was separately confirmed The Mad Hatter would make an appearance in Season 3, although the Batman rogue's voice actor has yet to be announced.

Season 3 will pick up where Season 2 left things, with Harley and Poison Ivy becoming a romantic couple after Ivy's fiance Kite Man broke up with her. "That's the big thing for us to chew on," said Harley Quinn co-creator Justin Halpern in Sept. 2020, explaining that Season 3 will examine how Harley and Ivy's messy romantic histories complicate their relationship.

"The thing we have discussed preliminarily is the idea that these two characters have had a lot of toxic relationships in their past," Halpern noted. "Although Ivy and Kite Man wasn't toxic, it also wasn't an equal relationship, you know? He loved her a lot more than she loved him."

Harley Quinn stars Kaley Cuoco, Lake Bell, Diedrich Bader, Alan Tudyk, Rahul Kohli, Christopher Meloni, Tony Hale, Ron Funches, Wanda Sykes, Natalie Morales, Jim Rash, Giancarlo Esposito, Jason Alexander and J.B. Smoove. Seasons 1 and 2 of the series are available to stream on HBO Max. Season 3 does not have a release date but is expected to premiere in either late 2021 or early 2022.
