The creators who took Venom into the realm of cosmic horror are now collaborating on Image Comics' magic-themed Vanish.

Writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Stegman announced the details of the creator-owned project after previously revealing it on their KLC Press Substack newsletter in January. The series features a grimy world of spellcasters and superheroes, combining fantasy and science fiction in a manner similar to Cates and Stegman's "King in Black" story arc, the culmination of their three-year Venom run with a focus on the Symbiote god Knull.

"Sick and tired of all these 'young adult' stories about magic, and wizards, and destiny and love and bla bla bla? Well, good news! We are too!" Cates said when announcing the series at Comicbook.com. "So we made Vanish to answer the one question we've all been asking; What if magic was...metal? This is a project that Ryan and I have been secretly building and working on quietly in the background for years now, and we cannot wait to unleash it on you. And the fun part for us is, well, pay attention closely...like the reveal of any great magic trick, you'll never see this one coming."

Stegman added that Vanish was the "most exciting thing I've drawn," and added that the goal with the book was to publish a story that "we could never do at Marvel."

A preview of Vanish #1 already shows a marked difference when compared to the language and vibe of the team's Marvel work, with cursing and a down-trodden, drug-popping protagonist named Oliver Harrison whose poor mental state far exceeds what Eddie Brock suffered at his lowest point in Venom. Described as a former chosen one who peaked too early, Oliver now leads a suburban life plagued by nightmares that he tries to drown out with alcohol. But there's more to Oliver than meets the eye, and after a thwarted mugging in an alleyway puts him face-to-face with a teen superhero named Battle Rocket, Oliver remembers his former life in the Mistlands of Everkeep -- a realm suffused with magic that he studied in until the age of 14, when he defeated a cataclysmic threat to the world.

Working alongside Cates and Stegman are JP Mayer, who inked the pair's Venom run, colorist Sonia Oback (The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows, Witchblade) and John J. Hill (Crossover, Harley Quinn). Issue #1 also releases with a variety of variant covers illustrated by industry heavy-hitters including Ed McGuinness and Greg Capullo.

Vanish launches in print via Image Comics in September, and will also be available digitally on multiple platforms, including the KLC Press Substack newsletter.
