It's no secret that many older shows received sequels and spin-offs to try and once again pull in their fanbase, and this is a trend that is even applies to properties in the romance genre. Sadly, many of these continuations didn't win the hearts of fans, and few of them have even gotten an anime.

These series tried to recapture the formula that made the original pop, while others tried to build upon endings that the fanbase wasn't keen on. Some series barely even made it to getting translated into other languages due to their weak sales even in Japan. Vampire Knight Memories is arguably one of the most infamous examples of this among romance franchises, but it's far from the only one.

10 Vampire Knight Memories

vampire knight

Vampire Knight ended with Yuki being pregnant by Kaname, who was sealed away, and marrying Zero, who helped raise his kid. The series is one of the few examples in anime of the protagonist ending up with both characters.

Memories sets out to explore what happened after the story ended, the time Yuki spent with Zero, and how Kaname eventually met and became the father of both his own child and Zero's. Needless to say, this didn't help with the ending of the series.

9 Fruits Basket Another

manga cover

Fruits Basket Another doesn't have any of the original cast in it, but it does have Sohma kids. These kids attend the same school as the regular cast, but all the interesting plot points like the zodiac curse are gone.

Many fans who have read the story believe that the characters are flat, the plot is too formulaic, and the designs are too close to the original characters.

8 Boys Over Flowers 2

Boys Over Flowers 2

Boys Over Flowers is one of the most popular live-action dramas ever made, and the manga it's based on is widely popular. Most fans aren't even aware that Shonen Jump released a manga that followed another cast of characters at the same school.

Sadly, the new F4's only goal is to be like the original cast of characters, and many fans note that the charm just isn't there. The plot also puts the protagonist Oto in a situation that many believe is too convenient for the plot.

7 Peach Girl Next

Peach Girl Cast

Peach Girl was a popular shojo series that gained a popular anime in 2005. The series neatly wrapped up all the characters and their relationships as Momo and friends began to move on towards adulthood.

Next came out in 2018 and was set to show the characters adult lives, as the book jumps the series ten years forward. The story is fun, but the book seems to have been released too late to capture the interest of a fanbase that had since moved on.

6 Wolf and Parchment

Wolf and Parchment novel

Spice and Wolf is still a big deal in the anime and manga community as it has a much different tone than other shows. The relationship growth between Holo and Lawrence was perfect, and the series ended with the two being married and having a baby.

Wolf and Parchment follows the adventure of the couple's child, Myuri. Sadly, many fans did not find Myruri as interesting as her mother Holo.

5 Cardcaptor Clear Card

Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card Arc Sakura And The Fire And Water Birds Episode 18

Clamp is an amazing team of writers who have no problem making anime and manga classics. Cardcaptor Sakura is one of the most celebrated magical girl shows to ever be made, and the love between Sakura and Li is incredibly well made.

Clear Card came back to jump the story forward by a few months, which made many fans feel like the events weren't natural. The series is still publishing, but it hasn't come anywhere close to the original's popularity.

4 Citrus Plus

Next takes place right after the marriage proposal, but many fans have no clue the series even exists. Most retail outlets that stock it at all only tend to carry the English version online, decreasing the chance of potential readers stumbling across it while browsing.

3 Oreimo Kuroneko

Oreimo cast

Oreimo is a show that brought out a lot of disagreements in the anime community and essentially had no real ending. This made the fan base rather unhappy with the show, so a series called Kuroneko was published.

The series begins at what should be the fifth novel in the story where Kuroneko actually takes the spotlight, and a real ending is shown. Sadly, the poor name choice made most manga fans believe it was a spin-off, if they were even aware of the connection to the original in the first place.

2 Shuffle! Memories

Shuffle Asa

Shuffle was a popular harem series that actually ended with the best friend winning the guy. Many fans gave high praise to the show for its unique set-up at the time and the well-done character development.

Memories skips the series ten years into the future to show that all the worlds have now blended together thanks to the original cast, but the whole thing just felt boring and unnecessary.

1 Love, Chunibyo, And Other Delusions: Take On Me

Rika and Yuta in Chunibyo.

The Chunibyo anime seemed to lose a bit of steam during the second season, so it's not all surprising that many fans never watched the final movie. The movie brings the series full circle by having Rika live on her own once again.

There is no marriage proposal and no major events that solidify the future of the couple beyond Yuta once again realizing that he loves Rika just the way she is. It's sweet and all, but stories need conflict to be interesting, and Take On Me doesn't really have any.
