Legacies creator Julie Plec revealed she still plans to continue The Vampire Diaries universe with another spinoff.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Plec confirmed there are more stories left to tell despite The CW's cancelation of Legacies, the network's last remaining Vampire Diaries project. "We had a plan to keep the franchise on the air until the next installment, which exists in our brains, but not on the page yet," she said.

This update comes after Legacies aired its series finale, shuttering the franchise for the foreseeable future. However, Plec promised that "there will be another one," and this cancelation would not stop her from continuing to explore Mystic Falls. "We're a little sad, we're going to take a beat," she admitted. "But yeah, there's more ideas. There's more to do." There's currently no word yet on where viewers will be able to watch the next spinoff series or when they can expect it to premiere.

Despite Plec's hopeful outlook on the spin-off's departure, she admitted it was bittersweet for the cast and crew. "We did 331 episodes of television and a lot of people that worked on Season 1 of Vampire Diaries worked on Season 4 of Legacies," the showrunner explained. "There was such a beautiful family that we were able to build in Atlanta across these three shows. To think that that's just gone now is sad."

The final episode of Legacies welcomed a new generation of gifted teens, opening the door for more stories sets in the fictional Salvatore Boarding School. The series finale also witnessed the return of several fan-favorite characters from The Originals and The Vampire Diaries.

The CW recently overhauled its entire schedule, canceling seven shows in May 2022. Affected series included Naomi, 4400, Roswell, New Mexico, In the Dark, Charmed, Dynasty and Legacies. The shake-up marks the first time since 2009 that The CW will not air a show set in The Vampire Diaries universe.

The Vampire Diaries aired for eight seasons on The CW, proving to be one of the network's most popular projects at the time. The teen paranormal series would go on to spawn two follow-up series. First was The Originals, which ran for four seasons and reintroduced antagonists Klaus Mikaelson and his family as leads in a New Orleans-based story. This was later followed by Legacies which followed Klaus' daughter Hope and a group of supernatural teens as they attended a private boarding school for gifted individuals.

The Vampire Diaries, The Originals and Legacies are currently available to stream on The CW.
