The history of younger versions of comic book characters being featured in a spinoff series dates back to at least "Little Archie," and now Valiant Entertainment is getting in on the fun with the four-issue "Valiant High," part of the digital-exclusive comiXology Originals line.
If you're wondering exactly where characters like Faith, X-O Manowar, Archer & Armstrong and Quantum & Woody fall in the high school pecking order, CBR has the first look at a "Class of 2017" teaser from the series, which debuts on Feb. 22 from the team of writer Daniel Kibblesmith, artist Derek Charm and colorist David Baron.
"Valiant High" was first announced in October, as part of the initial lineup of "comiXology Originals," comic books initially released exclusively on the industry-leading digital platform. The comedic series rather clearly takes place outside of Valiant's shared universe continuity, but involves many of the brand's famous characters in unexpected ways, like Bloodshot appearing as a dodgeball-loving gym teacher.
Here's the official description of the series: "Before they became legends, the world’s most formidable heroes were roaming the halls at Valiant High -- a super-powered preparatory academy where Aric “X-O Manowar” Dacia is a record-setting running back, Colin “Ninjak” King is a debonair foreign exchange student, and Coach Bloodshot is way, way too into dodgeball. Now, Amanda “Livewire” McKee and her best friend, Faith “Zephyr” Herbert, are taking it all in for the first time at the one high school where power trumps popularity!"
"You might have some people out there that are familiar with the Valiant superhero universe -- or aren’t -- and this gives them a different way to go into that Valiant Universe in an interesting manner, and get exposed to Ninjak, Faith and Bloodshot in a wholly unique way," comiXology Senior Director of Communications Chip Mosher told CBR back in October of "Valiant High."
"Valiant High" #1 will be available on comiXology on Feb. 22. Here's the cover, by David Lafuente:
