WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Season 1 of Netflix's V Wars.

Netflix's V Wars ended on a high-octane note with humans and the vampiric Blood Nation going to war. Throughout the show's first season, Michael (Adrian Holmes) was in charge of the Bloods after becoming patient zero at the Arctic Circle, but in the finale, there's a huge power shift as he's ousted because he wanted to make peace with mankind.

However, in doing so, the series whitewashes its biggest plot twist, reducing the agency of one of its biggest characters, the millennial journalist Kaylee (Jacky Lai). That's because instead of making her the true leader of Blood Nation as in the comics, this now goes to Calix (Peter Outerbridge).

In the comics, Kaylee's character was originally Yuki Nitobe, a spunky journalist who critically dissected both sides of the coin. She's close to Luther (played by Ian Somerhalder), as he's the doctor trying to save mankind from the infection, while her journalism also allowed the Bloods to tell their side of the story. She believes in freedom of speech and wants to expose the government as it actively tries to suppress the vamps.

As this television reporter, she was at the forefront of the news during the human-vampire wars, even calling up Luther to talk when she wants to remain as unbiased as possible. Yuki -- being the only one who interviewed the vampires who weren't violent -- was even threatened by many extremists as they felt she betrayed humanity. It came to a head when she was kidnapped by some underground vampires in order for her to see the truth about the politics behind the war and genocide affecting the Bloods. The big twist, however, came later on when it was discovered Yuki was actually the leader of the underground vampire faction.

Fans of the book seemed to think the series was going this way when Michael was overthrown as the Bloods believed his judgment was clouded by his friendship with Luther. Bloods were been poisoned by BludSub, a compound meant for vamps to feed on instead of blood, and with Michael taken away to be killed, his general Ava admitted a new leader would have been unveiled. In a clip that's similar to the vlogs Kaylee's been putting out, Calix is confirmed as the new leader, switching sides from the government as he infected himself, believing the Bloods to be the superior species. He's been working with a secret cabal and Luther's son (who's immune). And with the source of the infection in their possession now, Blood Nation is weaponizing bigger than ever as they want to wipe humanity out.

It's a shame this didn't go to Kaylee as fans wouldn't have seen it coming. She was determined to get the public to see the truth about the disease and how the government had an evil side to it, giving her moral reason. It then got personal after a tragic incident (the death of her boyfriend and editor) which perfectly set up this heel turn with someone more determined to make sure the public knew whatever truths could be uncovered. Alas, the show wastes this potential, failing to add nuance to someone even vamps can sympathize with.

It's unfortunate seeing such a prominent twist whitewashed as the takeover is given to the man who tried to erase the vamps for the government. It's unoriginal and your typical, run-of-the-mill white villain -- a man in black who's a predictable tyrant. It also doesn't help the show foreshadowed this a mile back. To add insult, this twist robbed a female Asian of what would be the most pivotal role in Blood Nation, and one has to wonder what grounds determined all she could be is a supporting character.

To take such a huge role from a person of color is an epic failure especially as the turn is so cliche. No one would have seen the media girl, a human at that, deciding to lead the vamps against her own kind. It wouldn't have just been a surprise, it would have been a dark irony that would have added intrigue, suspense, tension, drama and politics to a show that needed a spark. As it stands, Calix is vanilla as they come and lacks any sort of presence that Kaylee would have had as a Blood sympathizer instead of a power-hungry maniac.

V Wars stars Ian Somerhalder (Dr. Luther Swann), Adrian Holmes (Michael Fayne), Jacky Lai (Kaylee Vo), Peter Outerbridge (Calix Niklos), Kyle Breitkopf (Dez), Laura Vandervoort (Mila Dubov) and Kimberly-Sue Murray (Danika Dubov). Season 1 is currently streaming on Netflix.
