Director Uwe Boll thinks his film based on the game Postal is better than HBO's The Last of Us.
In a now-deleted post, Boll took to Facebook to respond to an article from The Daily Beast titled, "The Last of Us Is The Best Video Game Adaptation Ever," saying, "POSTAL will be always the best videogame based film ever and one of the best films ever shot." He continued that POSTAL has everything that is supposedly lost in films today.
Whether this was meant as a joke is unknown due to the infamous director's long history of attempting shock publicity. In 2007, in an attempt to drum up attention for the infamously offensive POSTAL, Boll released a video in which he hurled expletives at directors like Michael Bay and Eli Roth. Bay responded by calling Boll a "sad being" and saying he didn't care about his remarks.
Comparing Postal to HBO's The Last of Us
POSTAL currently holds a 9% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 34% audience score, with several critics stating that the film takes the dated attempts at shock humor from the game and fails to adapt them competently. The Last of Us currently has a critical rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes based on early screenings. While the site hasn't posted the aggregated reviews, it has released an article containing some thoughts from notable critics.
Uwe Boll has long been a polarizing figure in the film industry. He directed several early video game film adaptations, including Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead and Bloodrayne. Each of those films was a commercial and critical failure -- with the movies sitting at 1%, 3% and 4% ratings, respectively, on Rotten Tomatoes. In 2006, Boll famously challenged directors and critics of his films to a boxing match. Although the director announced he would retire from filmmaking in 2018, he has since returned with the 2022 film Hanau (Deutschland im Winter - Part 1).
The Last of Us premieres on HBO and HBO Max on Jan. 15 and will consist of nine episodes. It stars Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. While the show is an adaptation of the 2013 action-adventure game from Naughty Dog, the show's director, stars and even game creator Neil Druckmann have said the show will be different from the game, exploring themes and stories that the game only touched on.
