The shared history between Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Usagi Yojimbo dates back decades, and the comic book team-ups starring the anthropomorphic adventurers will be catalogued in Dark Horse Comics' newly announced trade paperback Usagi Yojimbo/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Complete Collection.
According to Dark Horse, the book will include 1987's "Turtle Soup and Rabbit Stew," 1988's "The Crossing," 1989's "The Treaty" 1992's "Shades of Green" and "Namazu," published in 2017 by TMNT license-holder IDW Publishing. It's also said to include bonus material by Usagi Yojimbo creator Stan Sakai.
"Usagi and the Turtles started off about the same time, in 1984… I think the Turtles were published a few months before Usagi, but basically, 1984," Sakai told CBR in 2017 of the history between his famous creation and Kevin Eastman and Peter Laid's TMNT. "And at that time there were very few black and white comic books. There was Elfquest, Grendel, Cerebus, of course, and just a couple of others. There weren’t that many so we supported each other. I wrote them letters, they wrote me letters, and we became friends."
Along with comic books, Sakai's Miyamoto Usagi's has appeared in every Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon to date, and was a part of the action figure line tying-in to the original series. Usagi Yojimbo has recently been optioned for its own animated series, from Gaumont Animation.
The Usagi Yojimbo/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Complete Collection is scheduled for release on Sept. 26, with a cover price of $17.99. The full cover is below.
