Director Jordan Peele's Us appears to be following in the footsteps of his Academy Award-winning film Get Out, as reviews from the film's premiere at the SXSW festival have begun pouring in.
Us is currently holding a perfect 100% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 8.2/10 based on 39 reviews, with the critical consensus stating, "With Jordan Peele's second inventive, ambitious horror film, we have seen how to beat the sophomore jinx, and it is Us."
Peele has earned acclaim for his directing and script, with many critics labeling the film as a masterpiece. Many others have stated that the film has cemented Peele as one of the best horror creators of this generation. Critics were quick to praise the performances of the cast, with Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke both earning acclaim.
While its still early in the film's release cycle, the outstanding early critical reaction to Us is mirroring that of Peele's directorial debut, Get Out, which held a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes through 139 reviews.
That film ultimately received 98% positive on the review aggregator and went on to win Best Original Screenplay at the 90th Academy Awards, and earn four nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. With Us off to a similarly hot start, it should come as no surprise if Peele is a familiar figure come next year's awards season.
Written, directed and produced by Jordan Peele, Us stars Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, Anna Diop, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Kara Hayward, Tim Heidecker and Shahadi Wright Joseph. It is set to hit theaters Mar. 22 everywhere.
