Blumhouse is transforming one of its films into a television series. The studio's television arm is partnering with UCP to create a series based on Leigh Whannell's science fiction thriller Upgrade.

Upgrade follows Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green) as he is injected with a computer chip called STEM, which enhances his physical attributes. The series picks up a few years after the events of the film and features a new protagonist, injected with a STEM chip meant to curb criminal activity.

Whannell will serve as a writer, director and producer on the series, joined by Tim Walsh (Treadstone). Also joining the project are writer-producers Krystal Houghton Ziv and James Roland. Blumhouse's Jason Blum will produce alongside Brian Kavanaugh-Jones from Automatik, which Blumhouse teamed up with on the horror film Gretel and Hansel. The series is a co-production between Blumhouse Television and UCP, a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios, under Blumhouse’s 10-year deal with NBCUniversal.

Blumhouse had previously developed a television series based on The Purge series of films for USA. Whannell recently wrote and directed his second film, The Invisible Man, a modern update of the H.G. Wells novel.
