Lately, it seems like everything is coming up Marvel! The Marvel Cinematic Universe came out swinging with both fists this year, breaking records with Black Panther before breaking the entire Internet with Avengers: Infinity War. And 20th Century Fox has been no slouch either since Deadpool 2 that takes everything you liked about the first movie and cranks the dial up to 11! If you’re a big Marvel fan, then it’s a great time to be alive. The only downside is that it can be a little bit overwhelming.

After all, there is such a flurry of upcoming movies, TV shows and games that it’s hard for even the biggest fans to keep up with everything. And as sad as we are to say it, not everything is good news. For every upcoming Marvel project that has us crazy-hyped, there’s another one that looks like a needless cash grab or an unnecessary sequel. Because of that, it can feel difficult to discover what’s worth the excitement and what’s worth skipping. But don’t worry; that’s where we come in! We’ve compiled a solid list of Marvel’s biggest potential hits and biggest potential flops for the next year and beyond. Just keep scrolling to discover 10 Marvel Projects we're excited for, and 10 we're not!

20 EXCITED FOR: AVENGERS 4

Avengers Infinity War Thor Rocket Groot Stormbreaker

This one almost goes without saying, but we’ll say it anyway: we absolutely cannot wait for the next Avengers movie. In some ways, this is a bit unexpected. After some mixed reactions to Avengers: Age of Ultron, some fans wondered if there was still much gas in the tank to fuel these mega-blockbuster Avengers movies. However, Avengers: Infinity War brought all of the old excitement back and tripled it, leaving us with an insane cliffhanger in which half of our heroes (and, in fact, half of the universe) had completely disappeared. We want to see what happens next!

We can't wait to find out which Avengers make it out of Avengers 4 alive.

While it’s a bit morbid, much of our excitement stems from that uncertain list of Marvel heroes. You don’t have to be a comics expert to know that at least some of our disappeared characters will return, but who will come back? Will characters like Gamora, who died before Thanos had all the Stones, stay dead? And we can’t ignore that some of our favorite Avengers actors have finished out their contracts. For characters like Captain America and Iron Man, we have to get ready to say goodbye, no matter what happens to their characters in the movie.

19 NOT EXCITED FOR: VENOM

Sony has had a pretty big dream for many years now; the studio wants to have a Spider-Man cinematic universe to rival the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The end of Amazing Spider-Man 2 was supposed to set some of that up (with movies planned around groups like the Sinister Six), but the tepid returns of that movie led Sony to reluctantly work with Marvel to create Spider-Man: Homecoming. Sony's dream never died, though, and now the studio is trying to piggyback off Homecoming’s popularity to launch a solo Venom movie. There’s just one problem: no one cares.

On paper, the Venom movie is a great idea. He has been a fan-favorite Spider-Man villain for many years now, and having someone like Tom Hardy take the title role made it sound like we would get the physically intimidating Eddie Brock from the comics. However, the movie’s previews destroyed all of our hopes: Hardy’s Brock runs out like a frightened victim while uttering his lines in a weird, almost lisping accent...hardly the stuff of intimidation! Throw in the late-90’s looking CGI and the fact that the movie will have little or no Spider-Man, and this one’s an easy pass for us. Better luck next time, Sony!

18 EXCITED FOR: CAPTAIN MARVEL

By now, we’ve all been conditioned to stay after the credits of every Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. Infinity War was no exception, and faithful fans got to see Nick Fury and Mariah Hill trying to respond to the crisis of people disappearing. However, they start disappearing as well, but not before Fury is able to send a message to his last, best hope: Captain Marvel! This hints that she will play a prominent role in Infinity War’s sequel, so we’re more excited than ever to see her solo movie.

Starring Brie Larson, Captain Marvel will be set in the 1990s and will also feature a young Nick Fury.

This MCU prequel will also see the cinematic return of the beloved S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson as well as the return of Guardians of the Galaxy bad guy Ronan the Accuser. So, our excitement for this movie was already pretty high due to all of these factors. Throw in the comics revival of the character (thanks in large part to the absolutely amazing writing of Kelly Sue DeConnick) and we can’t wait to see what this character brings to the MCU. Captain Marvel is guaranteed to be a major force in these movies for years to come.

17 NOT EXCITED FOR: ANT-MAN AND THE WASP

When it comes to movies we’re not excited for, sometimes it's just a matter of bad timing. That’s basically the case for Ant-Man and the Wasp. The Ant-Man movies mostly focus on telling (pardon the pun) smaller stories within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And that’s fine: we don’t think that every movie needs to be a huge, Earth-in-peril kind of affair. However, Avengers: Infinity War raised the stakes higher than any other movie and then left us hanging for the resolution. As the first MCU movie after that, Ant-Man and the Wasp looks a little disappointing.

This has nothing to do with the performers in the movie: Paul Rudd looks to be his usual charming self as Ant-Man, and giving Evangeline Lilly to a more active role as the Wasp looks like it will give the movie a much-needed shot in the arm. And there should be lots of gravitas in the movie due to Michael Douglas and Laurence Fishburne. But the movie doesn’t seem to be offering much beyond what the first one had, and the villain seems completely ill-defined from the trailers. Compared to how great Thanos was as a villain, this seems to be the icing to our lukewarm anticipation to this film.

16 EXCITED FOR: X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX

The Phoenix is a mythological creature associated with resurrection. It’s only fitting that it is also associated with the X-Men, as these movies have managed to successfully resurrect themselves. After hot messes like X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, X-Men: First Class changed actors, changed decades and reinvented the franchise. Now, X-Men: Dark Phoenix is the next chapter in this evolving story, and we’re quite excited to see it. This is due in no small part to how well Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner embodied the character of Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Jean Grey's evolution into the Phoenix was already teased in X-Men: Apocalypse.

If we’re being honest, that movie was a bit of a disappointment following the wild awesomeness of X-Men: Days of Future Past, but Turner absolutely killed her performance as young Jean Grey. Most excitingly, the end of the movie showed us a glimpse of the future, as Jean was forced to access the Phoenix Force to defeat Apocalypse. This was presented as a triumphant moment, but X-Men comics fans know that the Phoenix ends up corrupting Jean and threatening the entire planet. Fans have been waiting literally decades to see a solid film version of the Dark Phoenix story and can’t wait to see how this plays out!

15 NOT EXCITED FOR: CLOAK AND DAGGER

cloak and dagger tv

When Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered on ABC, it wasn’t that surprising. By that point, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was thoroughly a Disney production, so a show on the Disney-owned ABC made sense. It was more surprising, though, when the MCU expanded its shows to Netflix and later to Hulu. Now, it looks to land in the most unexpected place of all: on the cable channel Freeform. This former Family Channel will be airing the Cloak and Dagger TV show. While the network get full points for an unconventional choice, we’re not really that excited.

First, there’s the tonal confusion. Based on the trailers, it’s tough to understand what kind of show this is. Is it a romance? Is it a youth drama? Or is it a superhero story? It’s also tough to get a feel for the title characters: the show may prove us wrong, but they don’t have a lot of personality in these clips. Finally, we’re a bit worried about the on-screen presentation of their powers: done right, these two have some of the more visually impressive powers in the Marvel Universe. However, on a small-screen budget, we’re afraid that every fight scene will look cheap and weird, and that could get old fast.

14 EXCITED FOR: RUNAWAYS SEASON 2

runaways

Runaways seemed like a calculated gamble at the time of its release. On one hand, it was based on a comic that was a hit for its devoted fans, and those same fans had clamored for these characters in the MCU for years. On the other hand, this was going to be Hulu’s first rodeo with a Marvel property, and after the runaway success of the Netflix MCU, fans wondered if Hulu could keep up. However, the season ended up being surprisingly solid, and we’re quite excited to see where the second season takes us.

The first season of Runaways successfully balanced a lot of spinning plates at once.

Runaways adapted the characters and plot from the comics in a way that was true to its source material, while it also made some changes that actually enhanced the story instead of hurt it. The show was wise enough to take its time in showing how these characters came together and slowly learned how to use their new powers and equipment. And it all culminated in a cliffhanger just as good as any comic, leaving us all breathlessly anticipating what the next season would bring. Don’t waste any time: go stream season one and join the hype train.

13 NOT EXCITED FOR: DAREDEVIL SEASON 3

While we may be excited about the second season of Runaways, Daredevil is a different story. It has had two seasons so far, and both were quite good. Fans got even more of a Daredevil fix when the character prominently appeared in The Defenders. Now, he’s poised to get a third season, but it’s tough to muster much excitement for it. In part, this is because the show is a victim of its own success: it hasn’t been afraid to be dynamic and make serious changes... but that’s left us with a character and show that we’re not that hyped about anymore.

Think about it: by now, we’ve seen Daredevil defeat his archnemesis, both as a hero and as his alter ego. And we’ve seen him discover and lose two major loves of his life, all while he managed to detonate his working relationship (and much of his friendship) with Foggy Nelson. The next season will have to explain how he mysteriously survived the finale of The Defenders, but we’re forced to ask a blunt question: does anyone really care? It seems like many of Daredevil’s greatest stories have been told and much of his supporting cast has gone on to do their own things, leaving very little for us to dive into.

12 EXCITED FOR: BLACK WIDOW

Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Widow has had a rather meteoric rise to fame. She began as a humble supporting cast member in Iron Man 2, and then she really blossomed in the first Avengers movie. Since then, fans have clamored for a solo Widow movie, but she’s been stuck stealing scenes in the movies of other characters. Now, though, Disney has promised that it's working on the solo movie Black Widow deserves, and we have to tell you: our hype is very real.

In a movie, Black Widow's solo adventures could include lots of different stories.

One great option would be the equivalent of a Black Widow "Year One"-type story. This could show us her origin and training, and a prequel could open the door to a lot of fun cameos (kind of like in the upcoming Captain Marvel.) Another prequel approach could show us how Black Widow and Hawkeye met up, and how she ended up joining S.H.I.E.L.D., which would also be a great excuse for Hawkeye (the Avenger who gets the least love) to shine. Alternately, we wouldn’t mind a straightforward spy movie that shows us the misadventures she gets up to when she’s not being an Avenger!

11 NOT EXCITED FOR: GAMBIT

Channing Tatum Gambit

In a lot of ways, the Gambit movie is the opposite number of the Black Widow movie. In the case of the Black Widow movie, fans had to badger Disney for years before the studio began seriously working on it. In the case of the Gambit movie, very few fans seemed to actually want the film, but 20th Century Fox never wastes a chance to remind us that it’s still coming. At this point, we’re not worried about whether it comes out or not because, to be perfectly honest, the movie sounds like it would be terrible.

As you may or may not remember, Gambit has already had a big-screen introduction: the character briefly appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, though the cameo was pretty forgettable. The studio decided a solo movie would need a bit more star power, so it tapped Channing Tatum for a role as the Cajun X-Man. He’s one of the big reasons we’re not excited: Tatum is a gifted actor (and a surprisingly funny one), but everything from his body to his personality seems ill-equipped to portray the lanky scoundrel of a mutant. And much of the comic Gambit’s charm comes from his interactions with other X-Men, and the time-hopping X-Men movies mean that it may be difficult to find a place for this ragin’ Cajun.

10 EXCITED FOR: LUKE CAGE SEASON 2

Oh, Luke Cage. There was every chance for the first season of this show to go awry. After all, the Luke Cage of the comics is explicitly a character born of the blaxploitation era, and many of his adventures (and catchphrases) echo movies from that era, such as Shaft. It would be easy for a modern take on this character to descend into bizarre racial stereotypes, but the show instead did the impossible: it was a tight, self-contained narrative with amazing characters that also managed to incorporate race in a smart and engaging way.

Mike Colter delivers a captivating, pitch-perfect performance as Luke Cage.

Fans already knew this from his appearance in Jessica Jones, but he really comes into his own when given his own show. When he clashes with local crime bosses, we get to see the character crowded in on by all fronts. He’s dodging the cops in sequences (which very deliberately echo several real-world incidents) and dealing with specialized weapons (showing how the common man is figuring out how to fight metahumans) while trying to balance his active love life. Wherever the next season takes this character, we’re ready to binge it all in a single day!

9 NOT EXCITED FOR: SILVER AND BLACK

Silver-Sable-and-Black-Cat

Remember how we talked about Sony’s fierce desire to have a spin-off Spider-Man cinematic universe? Silver and Black is another movie that is born of that desire. And, it’s been brewing for quite a while. Andrew Garfield was still Spider-Man back when this movie was conceived. The title is a reference to the two female leads: Silver Sable and Black Cat. And like the upcoming Venom movie, this looks like it will be mostly (or even entirely) free of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. That’s just one of many reasons why we’re not excited for this film.

Just as Venom is strongest as a character when he is bouncing off of Spider-Man, the same can be said of Silver Sable and especially of Black Cat. Some of the antihero's best stories revolve around tension with Spider-Man because of their weird, sordid romantic past together. So this movie is vintage Sony: we haven’t been introduced to either character (much less introduced to someone like Black Cat as a love interest) and they may not interact with Spider-Man at all, but they will now headline a Spider-Man spin-off movie. At best, this movie will be a good action movie that uses some comic book names, so we’re forced to ask: why doesn't Sony go make a generic action movie instead? Since the studio recently pulled the film from its schedule, fans will have to wait a while to see the master thief and the Symkarian mercenary on the big screen.

8 EXCITED FOR: INSOMNIAC'S SPIDER-MAN

Spider-Man Insomniac PS4

There aren’t many video games on this list, but this is definitely the one we are most excited about. Insomniac Games is working on this game for its release on September 7, 2018, and it is exclusive to the PS4. Why are we so excited about it? It looks like it will hearken back to earlier Spider-Man games (such as Spider-Man 2 and Ultimate Spider-Man) that featured a kind of “open world” design. It seems like a simple idea, but this means you go beyond punching colorful bad guys and actually inhabit Spider-Man’s world.

This title looks like the most promising Spider-Man video game in years.

Early previews of the game show that Spider-Man’s humor is in full “swing,” as he stops to do things like taking selfies with the civilians that he saves. While that would be enough, Sony has promised that Spidey’s New York will feel very familiar and that there will be Easter eggs galore for Marvel fans to notice. Finally, we’re excited about this game because we hope it’s a sign of the future. Batman: Arkham Asylum helped redefine Batman and launched multiple titles that knocked our socks off. If this game is good and successful as those games, it may open the floodgates of great Marvel titles from Insomniac!

7 NOT EXCITED FOR: SQUARE-ENIX'S AVENGERS PROJECT

Canceled Avengers Game

The Avengers Project is the other video game on this list, and we’ll be honest: we’re not very excited about it right now. Some of this may be because there aren’t a lot of details. While the Spider-Man PS4 game has already given us things like a hilarious trailer, all we know about the Avengers Project is the little that we have been told. It’s being made by Square-Enix, which has potential, but the studio has been tight-lipped and merely said that it’s an open world action game. Beyond that, there’s not a lot to go on.

For instance, we know that it will be a third-person game, but there's is not a strong precedent for good, third-person Avengers games. The last one we had was the Marvel Heroes MMO which died pretty unceremoniously earlier this year. And the company seems focused on turning the game into some kind of revenue stream, and we’re not sure what form that will take. Could it be a subscription model? Loot boxes? Both? We’re fully crossing our fingers that this game will come out and blow us all away, but right now, it looks as if the company is treating this merely as a money-making opportunity than an opportunity to make an unforgettably good game.

6 EXCITED FOR: NEW MUTANTS

new mutants movie

There is a temptation for Marvel movie filmmakers to simply repeat the past. Once they find a movie template that works for them, they could just apply that template to future movies and go cash their checks. However, we have to give the X-Men movies credit: in recent years, Fox has refused to do that. First Class, Days of Future Past, and Apocalypse were all very different movies in terms of plot, tone, direction and even characters. And it looks like that willingness to do the unexpected has filtered down the New Mutants movie.

Dropping the New Mutants into a horror movie is an intriguing premise.

We’ve only seen early previews of this film so far, but it looks like it will unapologetically be a horror thriller. This is exciting because we haven’t really had a good superhero movie in that genre: even the characters that would go well with it (such as Blade or Spawn) usually end up being used in crazy action movies instead. We’re intrigued by what might happen to these characters and how it might impact the greater universe of X-movies. And hey, Deadpool showed them the world is ready for R-rated superhero movies. Maybe New Mutants will show the world is ready for superhero horror movies?

5 NOT EXCITED FOR: NEW WARRIORS

The New Warriors is a Marvel TV show you’ll see... eventually... somewhere. Why is that? It was originally going to be on the channel Freeform. However, despite the pilot episode testing very well, Freeform didn’t pull the trigger to pick up the show. As of this writing, it’s still a show that is looking to try to find a home. That’s one of the reasons we’re a bit nervous about this show: if Freeform would greenlight the unpromising-looking Cloak and Dagger show, what made the network hesitate about this one? We’re also a little nervous about the characters on this show.

For those without long memories (or just a longbox of 1990s comics), the New Warriors are just that: new. They are young heroes that come together to be greater than they are separately (think Avengers-lite and you’re there). However, those characters have never been very compelling. Take Night Thrasher for instance: he’s like if Bruce Wayne made a much lamer costume and fought crime with a skateboard. Perhaps knowing how weak the characters are, the show is making Squirrel Girl the leader of the team. While we absolutely love Squirrel Girl, two things stand out. First, she should have her own movie instead of headlining a C-list show, and secondly, adding a cool character because most of the others are forgettable won’t suddenly make the other characters more interesting.

4 EXCITED FOR: BLACK PANTHER 2

Some of the things that we’re excited about on this list are follow-ups to things that we never thought could be so good. And then there’s Black Panther. This was a movie that already had insane amounts of hype and momentum behind it ahead of its release. Nonetheless, the movie delivered in some pretty epic ways, giving us a fuller introduction to a great new MCU character and an absolutely awesome supporting cast. The movie was just as adept at world-building as it was as at telling a superhero story, which is why we’re so excited to see the sequel.

Black Panther's solo movie left several promising threads for a sequel to explore.

Depending on the time frame, it would be good to explore more of the fallout surrounding Killmonger briefly assuming the throne and militarizing the country. Does anyone still hold to his beliefs? We’d also like to see a follow-up to Wakanda revealing itself to the world. How does the most advanced country on the planet change all of the other countries it works with? Finally, we want to see what major changes happen after Thanos is defeated. Is it too early to hope to see Shuri as a superhero?

3 NOT EXCITED FOR: IRON FIST SEASON 2

The first season of Iron Fist was basically the black sheep of the Netflix MCU family. It wasn’t outright terrible, as some of its most ardent haters claimed. It was merely... okay. However, “okay” doesn’t really cut it when you’re being compared to killer seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. And the character of Iron Fist didn’t improve very much in The Defenders, so we’re left with a bit of a blunt truth: we are not at all excited for the second season of Iron Fist, no matter how important he is to the mythology.

On paper, Iron Fist is the lynchpin of the entire Netflix MCU. The thread that links all of these shows and characters is the Hand, and he is the one who has the mystic power to defeat them, possibly for good. However, everything about his first season seemed botched: the villain was a tepid disappointment while the supporting characters ranged from obnoxious to forgettable. Worst of all was Iron Fist himself: with a bland personality and disappointing fight scenes, we don’t care about the martial arts or the martial artists of the show, and we don’t think season two will change enough of that to make us care.

2 EXCITED FOR: SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING 2

Spider-Man-Homecoming

Ahead of its release, fans' feelings about Spider-Man: Homecoming was a little mixed. On one hand, Tom Holland had absolutely knocked it out of the park as Spider-Man in his cameo during Captain America: Civil War. On the other hand, this was going to be our third Spider-Man actor in ten years, and some fans were skeptical if there were many good Spider-Man stories left to tell. Homecoming proved the doubters wrong by introducing not only a vibrant and real world for Spider-Man, but even making a C-list villain like Vulture feel like a true threat. That first movie deserves props for doing a lot of things, but especially for accurately capturing the portrayal of both sides of Peter Parker.

Homecoming balanced Spider-Man's adventures with Parker's life as a high schooler.

For the sequel, we’re just as excited to see Spider-Man punch a new bad guy (in this case, Mysterio) as we are to see Peter Parker’s relationships with Ned and M.J. evolve. Also, this will be a movie set after Spider-Man helps defeat Thanos. It will be very interesting to see how all of this (including his death and rebirth) has changed our friendly neighborhood web-head. With any luck, he’ll still be the character we know and love.

1 NOT EXCITED FOR: JESSICA JONES SEASON 3

Oh, it hurts to add this one. The first Jessica Jones season was a breath of fresh air in pretty much every way: we got to see how an imperfect, damaged person with powers tries to save lives, all while barely keeping her own life together. And we got to see in Purple Man as the best MCU villain to date: someone who is a real threat to our hero and to the entire world. And, of course, we got to see a character and a show that was fearlessly romantic at times. It was everything Avengers wasn’t, and we loved it for that fact.

And then there was the second season. That season was okay, but it failed to reach the heights that the first season did. Worse, some of the better supporting characters from the first season acted completely different in the second (we’re looking at you, Trish). We’re afraid that the third season of Jessica Jones has little left going for it: we already know everything about Jessica’s backstory and her background characters are no longer compelling. Unless there's an awesome curveball coming, we’re afraid the best case scenario for the next season could be is that we simply get more of the same.
