Marvel Comics is stepping up its publishing game by entering the ever-popular young adult genre. The New York-based publisher will release an Unstoppable Wasp YA novel next year.
The Unstoppable Wasp, aka Nadia Van Dyne, was introduced in Free Comic Book Day 2016 Civil War II. She has since headlined two series - once under Mark Waid and recently in 2018 under Jeremy Whitley. The character's latest torchbearer is author Sam Maggs, who will pen the new YA novel.
Maggs' enthusiasm came through in the official announcement. "I am thrilled and so honored to be taking the Unstoppable Wasp on her next adventure with Marvel Press,” she said. "Nadia Van Dyne’s scientific genius is matched only by her boundless optimism; she’s an incredible role model and exactly the kind of superhero I think we need right now."
The novel will follow Nadia as she struggles with the fact that she simply does not have enough time to do the things she wants to -- something we're likely all familiar with. Seeing as how she's new to the superhero business, new to true friendship, new to being a stepdaughter (to founding Avenger Janet Van Dyne, no less) and new to running her own laboratory, it's safe to say Nadia has a lot on her plate. Plus, let's not forget she's only just learning to be her own person, having finally escaped the clutches of the Red Room.
To help with all of this, Nadia is gifted with a virtual assistant that allows her to "do less" and "experience more." With this aid, she is able to pursue her own goals and interests. Though, as always, she'll learn things are a bit more complicated than that. On the bright side, she has her stepmother and and her squad G.I.R.L. to watch her back.
Even with a sunny disposition, there are hints of adversity being through at the Unstoppable Wasp's way. Maggs teases, "With her brilliant and diverse G.I.R.L. squad by her side, there’s nothing Nadia can’t do. Or is there!?! Guess you’ll have to pick up the novel to find out."
The Unstoppable Wasp by Sam Maggs arrives on May 26, 2020. The book is currently available for pre-order.
