Everyone loves a happy ending, but sometimes, those endings leave a lot of questions and confusion. For instance, the series may rush to fit an entire season's worth of content into a single episode to tie up loose ends. They may also try to make a last-minute grab for the audience's attention in the hopes of getting a second season approved.

If the first three episodes tend to make the show worth watching, it's the ending that decides whether there will be a new season. That impact can be happy or sad, but, above all, it should, at the very least, be good and not be some rushed amalgamation that leaves a lot to be desired.

10 Erased Should Have Been Longer (Erased)

Erased Child Kayo asleep on Child Sotaru's Shoulder

Studios may create a story that doesn't pace well or match the manga's continuing events. Erased is a great example, as the studio decided to focus more on the past events that Satoru goes back in time to change while leaving little time in the present for Satoru to regain his memories and bring Yashiro to justice. Instead of expanding in a second season or simply cutting down on time devoted to discovering Yashiro as the criminal, the studio rushed the ending with an unsatisfying capture and conclusion that barely checks out.

9 Charlotte's Last Episode Could Have Been A Whole Season (Charlotte)

Charlotte Anime Main Cast

The pacing throughout Charlotte was already messy, with the first half spent indulging in relatively light-hearted comedy before killing off one of the most adorable little sisters in anime history, sparking a full-on genre change as characters became soldiers in a secretive rebellion.

The main character, Yuu Otosaka, spends the entire last episode going around the world plundering powers from other ability-users. Events that could have taken an entire episode to develop, like whether or not to take away the healing powers from someone using them for good or seeing Yuu lose his memories, were given seconds of screen time. The episode ends on a happy note as Yuu is saved from bounty hunters and returned to his loved ones, though how it got there is confusing.

8 Assassination Classroom's Ending Is A Bittersweet Look At Koro-Sensei's Impact (Assassination Classroom)

Nagisa stabs Koro-Sensei in Assassination Classroom finale

After the death of Koro-sensei in Assassination Classroom, viewers learn that all of the students go on to live happy lives thanks in no small part to the encouragement of the dedicated Koro-sensei. Nagisa is especially lifted by Koro-sensei's efforts and later becomes a passionate teacher to a rebellious group of students. Koro-sensei gave them time, respected their wants and needs, and guided them into becoming well-rounded adults. However, the ending is bitter-sweet as Koro-sensei's death felt forced.

7 Sinbad's Season Finale Feels Like A Midpoint Rather Than The End (Magi: Adventure of Sinbad)

Sinbad Magi Anime Cast

Episode 13 of Magi: Adventure of Sinbad feels like the midpoint of a twenty-six-episode season instead of a finale. Having concluded their troubles in Artemyra in the episode before, Episode 13 is mostly filler. Sinbad and those traveling with him do a couple of quick, touristy things that don't go well before reconvening with the rest of the team at their base of operations in the Reim Empire. They open up some fine spirits for a drinking party and celebrate what's next... except there hasn't been any next.

6 Sword Art Online Season One Should Have Been Two Seasons (Sword Art Online)

Asuna Sleeping Wearing NerveGear

Season 1 of Sword Art Online has two happy endings, with the second one having much less impact. At the midpoint of the season, the Aincrad Arc comes to a close. Akihiko keeps his word to Kirito after their fight and frees all the remaining player-prisoners. Kirito and Asuna have a romantic moment as they watch the Floating Castle of Aincrad disintegrate before the two promise to find each other in the real world.

Cut to some time later, Kirito discovers that Asuna and the other players are being held as test subjects in a new game under a NerveGear-induced coma, beginning the Fairy Dance arc. At the end of the arc, all the remaining players are freed, and the couple experiences their Season 1 happy ending again, though it's not as impactful as the bait-and-switch ending during Aincrad's fall.

5 Ouran High School Host Club's Romantic Dance Retconned The Episode's Conclusion (Ouran High School Host Club)

Cast of Ouran High School Host Club posing together

Ouran High School Host Club's last episode pushed the Haruhi x Tamaki ship heavily, with each host club member playing their part in getting the two together. However, this is retconned at the end when the two return to Ouran Academy and participate in the dance held at the school's fair. Under the fireworks, Haruhi dances with each member of the club while the credits roll. It's a happy end for all pairings as each member gets a moment with the leading lady and seems to hint that they all still might have a chance to end up with her.

4 The Mass Murderer Gets A Happy Ending (Future Diary)

Yuki And Yuno Embrace In The Future Diary

Future Diary is a nightmare of confusion as characters skip between worlds and time travel. Yuno's obsession with her boyfriend, Yukiteru, allows her to become a mass-murdering goddess of time and space. She nearly ends the world three times before Yukiteru manages to stop her and set things right. However, Yukiteru is also obsessed with his girlfriend and mopes about in a lonely, isolated dimension until Yuno is able to break through the divine barrier. Yukiteru and Yuno assumably live happily ever after, but many fans feel that they don't deserve to after all the bloodshed and tragedy they caused.

3 The Ending of Fruits Basket (2001) Is Probably Why There's A Reboot

akito pulling tohrus hair fruits basket 2001

While Tohru certainly lightens the hearts of those who meet her, the overall impact she has on the Sohma family in 2001's Fruits Basket is minimal, boiling down to her telling the various Zodiac members how messed up their family treats them. Solidifying this point is the season finale where Tohru goes to meet Akito and can only say that they all have a right to live freely - something obvious that has been severely disregarded by the Sohma Family traditions. The series ends with Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo relaxing at home after this "insightful revelation," but not much has changed. Thankfully, the reboot provides a more cohesive and conclusive ending.

2 The Last Episode Of Tsukimichi Was An Unnecessary Introduction Of A New Arc (Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy-)

Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy

Episode 12 of Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy- starts off with a solid plan for the continuing misadventures of Makoto and his party. Makoto and Shiki are going to school while everyone else stays to watch over their hidden city. However, Makoto is snatched by the Goddess and sent to the war-front between humans and demons. Makoto has not been active in the war thus far as the Goddess abandoned him early on for being "ugly." This changes when Makoto is attacked by two high-ranking adventurers who have taken the demons' side.

Makoto causes significant damage to the adventurers and the surrounding battlefield but quickly returns to his familiars' sides, and the episode ends where it started. It was an unnecessary preface to the goddess' still-mysterious plans.

1 Cautious Hero Comes Full Circle (Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious)

cautious hero seiya and ristarte

Most of Cautious Hero was a recurring gag-comedy of Seiya training to the point of excess before over-killing the monster of the week. However, Seiya dies in the battle against the Demon Lord despite Ristarte breaking the rules to heal him. It's then revealed that Seiya and Ristarte are reincarnations and that this has happened before.

With the world saved but Seiya gone, Ristarte returns to the Divine Realm. She's given a more difficult world to save as punishment for breaking the rules in the Demon Lord battle. Ristarte's new task is to be done without powers, but, luckily, she and Seiya will be reunited yet again, ostensibly making the events of the entire series pointless.
