Villager popularity in the Animal Crossing series has always been a widely-debated topic. Villagers are split into a total of eight personality types, with four being reserved for male villagers, and four being reserved for female villagers. Many fans feel that while personality types in the original games were expressive and breathed life into many characters, they've been severely watered down over time, with New Horizons being the worst offender in this case.

This means that villagers aren't being judged based on their personalities alone. Instead, it's a villagers' appearance that ultimately determines how popular they become, with rankings remaining rather static over time. Characters like Marshal, Marina, and Raymond have been fan-favorites since day one, while others are doomed to sit at the bottom of the popularity list.

10 Crazy Redd Scams Players And Has A Rocky History With Tom Nook

Redd making a sale in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

He may not be a recruitable villager that can settle on players' islands, but it's impossible to think about unlikable characters within the franchise without Crazy Redd coming to mind. He scams players with fake art and statues, charging high prices for items that can't even be donated to the museum.

To make matters worse, his rocky history with Tom Nook doesn't help his likability. Dialogue from both Wild World and Happy Home Designer confirms that the two worked together in the past, with Redd scamming Nook out of everything he had.

9 Jambette Doesn't Have Much Of A Personality To Speak Of

Jambette's house from Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Character personalities may not be represented well by their dialogue, especially in New Horizons, but there are other ways for their true selves to shine through. This would be their appearance, as well as how they decide to decorate the interior of their house.

Sadly, for Jambette, there isn't anything about her character that stands out and grabs players' attention. Her appearance is that of a plain frog aside from a bit of makeup, and the interior of her house doesn't stand out, either.

8 Even Fellow Villagers Are Creeped Out By Pietro

Pietro talking to the villager in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Pietro the Sheep has one of the series' most striking designs, he resembles a circus clown. He's a smug villager, meaning he gets along well with others, and the interior of his New Horizons house is incredibly charming.

Sadly, it's this same unique circus clown persona that causes many fans to dislike him. Many people find clowns to be incredibly unsettling, based on more than their appearance, and Pietro isn't spared from this judgment despite being cuter than the average clown. Even his Pocket Camp profile states that most others are creeped out by his whole deal.

7 Rocket's Theme Doesn't Help Her Popularity

Rocket talking to the villager in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Every villager has a particular theme that they express through both their appearance and the interior of their home. When it comes to Rocket, her theme sadly doesn't do enough to cause fans to want her as a permanent resident on their islands. She's one of only a few superhero villagers, indicated by her jersey and the superhero outfit in her home.

Superhero villagers aren't incredibly popular to begin with. Combine this with Rocket being a Gorilla, an animal type that isn't too sought-after within the community, and it's hard for Rocket to stand out and attract fans. It doesn't help that the interior of her New Horizons home is a confusing mish-mash of beautiful Lovely furniture, and sporty exercise equipment.

6 Wart Jr.'s Main Gimmick Doesn't Appeal To Fans

Wart Jr.'s home in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Between villagers like Lily, Puddles, and Jeremiah, the frog category has some steep competition. Other frogs have to be exceptionally unique or charming in order to compete, and sadly, Wart Jr.'s most unique trait drives many potential players away from inviting him to stay on their islands.

The name Wart Jr. isn't appealing to begin with, and his wart-riddled appearance doesn't help matters, either. To make matters worse, he's a Cranky villager. His grumpy, unapproachable personality doesn't do anything to improve his likability.

5 Tammi's Eyes Are Unsettling

Animal Crossing villager Tammi standing in their home

Tammi is a peppy monkey villager, meaning she has a happy-go-lucky and excitable personality, able to get along with just about anyone. The interior of her New Horizons home is a charming, traditional style as well, but these aren't enough to get players to look past her appearance.

Her overall appearance is cute, with her yellow-and-gray color palette helping her to stand out from many of her fellow monkeys. The issue lies in her face – Tammi's eyes are blood-red and incredibly wide, so she comes off as too unsettling for many to want to have around.

4 Rodney Can't Compete With Other Hamsters

Rodney talking to the player in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing's cast is home to quite a few adorable hamsters, which immediately sets up a lot of stiff competition for Rodney. He's a smug-type villager introduced in New Leaf, and he just doesn't have any outstanding features to set him apart.

Attempting to search Animal Crossing, followed by Rodney's name, will result in a subreddit entirely dedicated to hating the villager. It's filled with posts of players lamenting Rodney's unexpected arrival on their island, doing anything they can to ruin his experience, and cheering when they finally succeed in making him move out.

3 Barold Has An Odd Appearance For A Cub

The interior of Barold's house in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Barold is a lazy cub villager introduced in New Leaf, and isn't brought back until New Horizons. With how many popular cubs there are in the series, and how off-putting Barold's appearance is in comparison, it's hard to understand why they would choose to have him return.

There are only a select few villagers with some form of beard, and none of them find their footing within the community. When players think of cute or unique cubs they'd like to have on their islands permanently, they tend to think about Bluebear, Judy, Maple, or Stitches.

2 Diva Doesn't Resonate With Fans

Diva about to move out from Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Out of all the female frog villagers, Diva by far has the least-liked appearance among them. Not only are her wide, piercing magenta eyes considered creepy to some, but the dark blue markings of each side of her face unfortunately cause Diva to look like she has facial hair.

Many players instantly hate her due to her appearance, and do anything they can to remove her from their islands. Like Rodney, a simple Google search containing the series and her name is all it takes for hate articles to begin popping up.

1 Moose Is No Match For The Competition

Animal Crossing New Horizons Moose

Moose is a jock-type rat villager who first appears in City Folk, and he's certainly got a unique appearance, but this isn't to his benefit. Every element of his design feels like it clashes with one another, and his unique expression that's supposed to convey smugness doesn't line up with his personality.

Matters are only made worse whenever players take a look inside his home in New Horizons. It would be a rather cozy-looking game room, if it weren't for the blue camouflage carpet clashing with the rest of the interior.
