Variety reports Universal Pictures has stepped up development on a film adaptation of Battlestar Galactica.

Prometheus 2 scribe Jack Paglen has signed on to write the screenplay, which will completely reboot the property for the big screen. Original series creator Glen Larson is on board to produce.

Although Bryan Singer was rumored as far back as 2009 to be interested in helming a big-screen version of the space opera, an adaptation briefly flickered to life in 2011, with John Orloff penning the screenplay, before fading away once more.

Three Battlestar Galactica series have aired on television since 1978, although it was Ronald D. Moore's 2004 reimagining for Syfy that drew acclaim. The series ran for four seasons, focusing on the core conflict between the humans and the Cylons, a cybernetic race created by humans that gained sentience. It spawned a short-lived spinoff series Caprica as well as webseries Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome.
