Universal Pictures is looking to Fast & Furious 6 director Justin Lin to helm the next installment of the Bourne franchise. Variety reports negotiations are in "the very early stages," with Lin uncommitted to his next film despite having several projects in development.

This is a sequel to the 2012 spinoff The Bourne Legacy -- Matt Damon supposedly will only return to the franchise if Paul Greengrass does -- with Jeremy Renner expected to reprise his role as Aaron Cross, a field operative for Operation Outcome, a black-ops program whose members are genetically enhanced.

Directed and co-written by Tony Gilroy, who co-wrote the first three Bourne films, The Bourne Legacy grossed $276 million worldwide. Universal hired Anthony Peckham to write the sequel's script in August.
