Universal’s Dark Universe May Make a Monstrous Return

Universal Pictures' monster-focused Dark Universe cinematic universe might be getting resurrected after it seemingly met its demise.

Is Universal's Dark Universe still alive? Apparently the franchise, long thought dead due to the failure of Alex Kurtzman's The Mummy reboot, might still be kicking, according to an Instagram post from an artist seemingly attached to the project.

Artist Robert Vargas wrote on Instagram that he had just wrapped a meeting with Universal executive Holly Goline, a member of the Dark Universe team. Vargas, who is best known for creating building-side murals in Los Angeles, did not go into further detail about how he is involved.

"Great meeting this morning with the amazing Dark Universe team," Vargas wrote in the post. "Looking forward to contributing to the Universal Pictures legacy with my work. Monster things in the works."

Sounds like Universal is still trying to get their monster-fueled franchise off the ground. The nascent cinematic universe was slated to kick off with The Mummy in 2017, but the movie was a critical and commercial dud despite recruiting favorites like Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella. It was reported recently that Universal would try to salvage Dark Universe was a movie based on the Bride of Frankenstein.
