Official Press Release
Unprecedented at any other festival of its kind, UncommonCon offers an all-new Children’s Area and Programming to the delight of its younger patrons (and parents) with a plethora of engaging, free or low-cost activities. Kids can frolic in a safe, quiet realm, choosing from several themed sections, with a variety of activities at each.
The free Arts and Crafts area provides an Artist’s Lounge where young cartoonists and artists can discuss their work, their future in art, and other art interests. Cartooning demonstrations and workshops will occur here throughout the weekend. In addition, a continously changing parade of craft activities offers youngsters the chance to make princess crowns, wizard hats, thumbprint dragons, mermaid sand art, and alien flip books, or create their own face-painting designs.
Readers and listeners will gather for storytelling in the Writer’s Corner, which features a reading lounge with genre stories both told and read by volunteer and celebrity readers. The area will also feature a children’s “author’s chair” which will allow young authors to share the stories and works they create in this area. Children will be given opportunities to draw a picture and write about a place they remember from the stories they hear. Bookmaking will also play a large part in this area, as children create books about fanciful stories they imagine or about themselves, all free of charge.
For a nominal fee, children and parents can join in on Make and Takes, in which a more skilled craft item is created to take home. Budding sculptors can pour statues of gypsum, hobbyists can make miniature models, young ladies-in-waiting can fashion flower hair wreaths, and foam daggers can be assembled by squires.
Building on its strong gaming area for grownups, the Kids Area hosts beginner and Learn-to-Play games throughout the day in its free Gaming area. Familiar board games and puzzles will be available for ad-lib play, and organized children’s games such as drop the handkerchief, four corners, and the story game will be interspersed throughout the weekend.
UncommonCon vendors selling kid-friendly items will also be invited to sell their wares in this welcoming, kid-friendly atmosphere. Adding to the fun are the myriad events planned by the festival. An exclusive preview of an upcoming fantasy animated series, Starseed Fairies, highlights the fun, and kids’ skills and creative efforts are put on display in a Coloring Contest, Paper Doll Fashion Contest, and Fairy Wings Decorating Competition. Also echoing the adult activities are the Children’s Masquerade and Costume Competition, and the Awards Ceremony honors the finest creations.
Volunteers will be on hand throughout the festival to ensure the safety and fun of little ones. In the past, fans of gaming and fantasy festivals have had to leave out their children, but UncommonCon creates the first family-friendly environment ever known among shows of its type. Since youth under 8 are admitted to the festival free with a paid adult, there is no reason for families not to bring the kids along for this weekend of educational, inspirational family entertainment.
The Children’s Realm is thankful to Arbys, Heritage Rare Coin Galleries, Duty-Tech Computers, ShaddowFish Comics and Crayola for their generous sponsorship of this event.
