WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Uncharted, now playing in theaters.

The original Uncharted series of games was a major franchise for the PlayStation family of consoles during its initial run. An exclusive series produced by videogame developer Naughty Dog, Nathan Drake himself became synonymous with the videogame company for years. Over a full decade before the character would come to life in live-action with 2022's Uncharted, Nathan was a major fixture for gamers -- and a key figure behind the character actually got the chance to appear in the film adaptation.

Uncharted features a surprise cameo by Nolan North, the original voice actor/motion-capture performer for Nathan Drake from the original Uncharted videogame series. On top of that, he even casually references one of the levels from those games while getting to meet his successor in the role.

Nathan Drake in Uncharted 4

At the heart of the Uncharted franchise has always been Nathan Drake. Introduced in 2007's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Nathan's journeys across the globe in search of treasure carried the series through nearly a decade of games until the conclusion of the storyline in 2016's Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. Specifically designed as a more down-to-earth protagonist than most videogame heroes, Drake was largely portrayed in the games by Nolan North, a prodigious voice actor in the videogame and animation community. North became more and more associated with the character as the series went on, even providing ab-lib dialogue and motion-capture performances for the character.

There have been multiple attempts to bring Nathan to live-action -- with Nathan Fillion playing the character in a fan film while Mark Wahlberg was initially signed on to play the character before eventually being cast as his friend and mentor Vincent Sully. In the 2022 film adaptation of Uncharted, a purposefully young version of the character is played by Tom Holland, effectively serving as a prequel to the version of Drake who appears in the games. While there are nods to the history of the game and its developer throughout the run-time, North also gets the chance to run into the character he spent almost ten years bringing to life.

Tom Holland as Nathan Drake from Uncharted

After surviving falling out of a plane while en route to the Philippines, Nathan and his frenemy Chloe (Sophia Ali) end up in the ocean atop a supply crate. Luckily, they land close enough to a small island resort and can swim to land. As they walk onto the beach, they pass by various families relaxing on the sands, including an unnamed man lounging in the sun. The man remarks that they've clearly been through some stuff. Nathan notes they just fell out of a plane -- with the man responding, "something like that happened to me once." This could be seen as a direct reference to North's work in the original Uncharted games, specifically Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. In that game, Drake also stows aboard a cargo plane and is eventually forced to leap out of it.

North's cameo is brief and sweet, if somewhat distracting. Given his typical work as a voice actor, it may not be entirely obvious to casual viewers who the man is. But as a nod to North's place in the history of the fan-favorite franchise, it's a fun moment that allows two Nathan Drakes to briefly meet each other, even if they don't fully recognize the other.

To see Nolan North's cameo, Uncharted is now in theaters.
