Uncharted: Mark Wahlberg Joining Tom Holland in Sony Adaptation

Mark Walhberg is in final negotiations to join Sony's upcoming adaptation of the popular Uncharted video game.

According to Variety, Wahlberg will play Victor "Sully" Sullivan, who's described as "an American treasure hunter, fortune seeker and businessman, as well as a friend, mentor and father figure to Drake," who's played by Tom Holland (and was nearly played by Wahlberg himself). Travis Knight, whom Sony began negotiations with in September, will direct the film.

The Uncharted video game series follows treasure hunter Nathan Drake and his friends Sully and Elena, who travel the globe to recover ancient artifacts. In doing so, they cross paths with pirates and other criminals in high-stakes adventures.

That said, the film's previous director, Dan Trachtenberg, made it clear the upcoming adaptation won't be a carbon copy of the source material, saying, "I didn't really feel like it was at all worthy of making a video game adaptation, [if] we're just gonna copy what the game is and just serve people a lesser experience than what they've experienced in such an incredible way." However, with Knight now in the director's chair, it remains to be seen what direction the film goes in.

Directed by Travis Knight, Uncharted stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg and is set to be released on Dec. 18, 2020.
