Photos from Sony Pictures' upcoming Uncharted movie offer a sneak peek at Tom Holland's globetrotting adventure. The images were tweeted out from the Uncharted movie's Twitter account, along with the caption, "A new year. A new adventure awaits," in honor of New Year's Day 2021. The photos highlight what appears to be a bejeweled, golden key, along with a very old map of the globe and a green statue covered in cobwebs. They also show what is presumably Holland's hand using said key to unlock some kind of ancient chest or container.Related: Uncharted: Wahlberg Celebrates Filming Wrap With Look at Sully's Signature Shirt

Announced in 2008, the Uncharted movie has seen its release date change multiple times and has switched directors on a nearly equal number of occasions. Mark Wahlberg was initially in talks to star in the film as Nathan Drake, with Robert De Niro costarring as his father and David O. Russell directing. Years after that version fell apart, the movie was then reimagined as an origin story for a young Nathan Drake, with Holland taking over the role. Wahlberg later rejoined the project to co-star as Drake's mentor and father figure, Victor "Sully" Sullivan, with Venom director Ruben Fleischer helming the project.

The Uncharted video game series was created in 2007 and follows the adventures of Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter and thief descended from the explorer Sir Francis Drake. They kicked off with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune on PlayStation 3, which has since been followed by three sequels and a prequel game titled Uncharted: Golden Abyss for PlayStation Vita in 2011. According to Holland, however, the Uncharted movie features an "original story" that isn't based directly on any of the video games.

Shooting wrapped on Uncharted in October, ahead of the film's scheduled theatrical release next summer. Sony has yet to announce when it will drop the movie's first trailer, though it has released an official photo of Holland dressed in Nathan Drake's trademark white half-buttoned long-sleeve shirt and brown cargo pants. In the meantime, Holland is keeping busy filming Marvel Studios' Spider-Man 3 for a December 2021 release date.

Up next, Holland will return to the big screen in March with Chaos Walking, a long-delayed adaptation of the post-apocalyptic novel series of the same name that Holland and his costar Daisy Ridley originally filmed in mid-to-late 2017. The pair later returned for reshoots in April 2019, after the initial cut of Chaos Walking was reportedly deemed "unreleasable" by Lionsgate executives.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer, Uncharted stars Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali and Tati Gabrielle. The film arrives in theaters July 16, 2021.
