“Uncanny X-Men’s” “Apocalypse Wars” Kickoff Reveals New Archangel Twist

This article contains spoilers for “Uncanny X-Men” #6, which is in stores now.

With the launch of the new “Uncanny X-Men” series back in January, writer Cullen Bunn has teased the mystery behind Archangel’s return to the ranks of the X-Men. The character transitioned from a peaceful amnesiac to a mindless predator drone off-panel, with the other members of Magneto’s team of X-Men equally unsure of the larger ramifications of Warren Worthington’s drastic makeover. In the following issues, Archangel’s status has remained stable, as he served as a weapon wielded telepathically by Psylocke.

The title’s “Apocalypse Wars” tie-in will focus on Archangel, and “Uncanny X-Men” #6 — which features art by Ken Lashley — focuses on the fact that the character previously took on the role of Apocalypse during “Uncanny X-Force’s” “Dark Angel Saga.” The issue finds Psylocke probing the seemingly mindless Archangel’s mind, searching for any sign of sentience, and stumbling across both what appears to be manifestation of the Dark Angel persona and another, more peaceful and angelic one. The vision that unfolds before Psylocke claims to be a prophecy and shows her events that may unfold in a small town called Green Ridge.

The vision shows a scene of destruction and carnage enacted by a group of Archangels. Worried about this vision, Psylocke and Magneto travel to Green Ridge, Colorado and are drawn — along with a crowd of people — towards a religious service being held inside of a tent. There they are shocked to see — Warren Worthington, fully human, preaching to a congregation with blood stains where his wings would be.

Whether or not this is the real Warren Worthington, or what relation this version of the character has to the mindless drone that the X-Men have been utilizing, remains to be seen.

“Uncanny X-Men” #7 arrives on May 4, 2016.
