WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy Season 2, streaming now on Netflix.

In Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy, the Hargreeves children time-traveled back to the 1960s. However, they didn't arrive as a group. Instead, they were scattered, each arriving at the same spot but at different times. Because of this, some of them went on to start new lives, while others only had a few days before the events of the season started. Eventually, Vanya, Luther, Allison, Klaus, Diego and Five were reunited, and they got involved in the historic event of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Their involvement, as revealed in the Season 2 finale, ended up creating an entirely new timeline.

While all of the Hargreeves had an impact on the timeline, Vanya may have had the biggest, as she gave superpowers to a young boy on the autism spectrum named Harlan. And it looks like Harlan's story isn't over just yet.

When Vanya first arrived in 1963, she was hit by a car and lost her memory. She was then taken in by the woman who hit her, Sissy, and started working on her and her husband's farm as their son Harlan's nanny. In that time, Vanya got extremely close to Sissy and Harlan. The two women fell in love, and Vanya showed that she had a strong connection to Harlan.

This connection was taken even further when Vanya saved Harlan from drowning. After giving him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, part of Vanya's powers were transferred into Harlan. As a result, Harlan got superpowers, but he didn't really understand what was happening to him. In the Season 2 finale, Harlan's powers threatened to destroy everything, but Vanya was able to get close to him and absorb his powers back into him.

However, that wasn't the end of it. In the Season 2 finale, Sissy and Harlan were driving away to California, and Harlan demonstrated that he could still make objects levitate. This tease seems to indicate viewers haven't seen the last of Harlan yet.

At the end of Season 2, the Hargreeves children returned to a new 2019 that was altered as a result of their involvement in 1963. Since Harlan was given abilities during that time, it stands to reason that in this version of the timeline, he too has superpowers. Now, if he were to return, Harlan would surely be much older, likely be in his seventies. However, it's also possible that whatever Vanya did to him changed him completely. Perhaps he doesn't age like others do anymore, if at all.

This, of course, remains a theory for now, but Vanya and Harlan's relationship was too important to simply be forgotten about in Season 3. The Umbrella Academy created an important bond between the two, and by showing us that Harlan still has powers, the show seemed to hint his story would continue.

As the superhero siblings find themselves facing a new enemy they know nothing about in the Sparrow Academy, Harlan could return in Season 3 to help Vanya and her brothers and sister fight back. The Umbrella Academy is, after all, about family, and one thing is certain: Vanya and Harlan are family now.

Streaming now on Netflix, The Umbrella Academy Season 2 stars Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher and Justin H. Min, with Ritu Arya, Yusuf Gatewood, Marin Ireland, Jordan Claire Robbins, Kate Walsh and Colm Feore.
