The following contains major spoilers for Savage Avengers #6, available now from Marvel Comics.

One of Marvel's most iconic villains has just taken up an even more iconic weapon in the future of Marvel 2099.

While the eponymous team of Savage Avengers #6 by writer David Pepose (Fantastic Four, Scout's Honor) and artist Carlos Magno (Lantern City, Carnage) is busy battling their way through the bleak future of 2099, their latest ally, Jacob Gallows, aka the Punisher, realizes just how out of their element these time-displaced heroes really are. Not only are the Savage Avengers unaware of the true threat behind the Deathlok Army, but they also have no clue that they're headed for war with a dual-lightsaber-wielding Ultron.

When the Punisher explains Ultron's status as the Prime Deathlok in this bleak future, the villain himself is seen surrounded by throngs of undead, cybernetic followers. Despite his already formidable metal stature and all the power it comes with, Ultron carries what appears to be a twin lightsaber sporting ominous red blades as his chosen sidearm.

Marvel Meets Star Wars

Ultron's weapon is nearly identical to that made famous by Darth Maul in 1999's Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Darth Maul was portrayed by Ray Park, who would later appear as Toad in 2000's X-Men as well as Snake Eyes in the live-action G.I. Joe films in 2009 and 2013. Maul's was the first double-bladed lightsaber to enter the Star Wars canon and has become an indelible part of the franchise's history in the years since.

Ultron made his introduction under the guise of the Crimson Cowl in the pages of 1968's Avengers #54 by writer Roy Thomas and artist John Buscema. The creation of Hank Pym, Ultron was designed to help humanity before developing sentience, as well as an innate hatred for Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Over the years, Ultron has gone through a variety of different forms, eventually settling on his fifth incarnation as the standard mold for the character going forward. The Ultron of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, portrayed by James Spader, was created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner before becoming the primary antagonist of 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron.
