Ubisoft fans are expressing their anger at the publisher after it announced that Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) are coming to Ghost Recon: Breakpoint.

Ubisoft announced that it will enter the NFT market by adding "Digits" to its catalog of AAA video games, starting with Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. While the company expressed excitement in adding unique in-world cosmetics to its games, fans are less pleased. Gamers took to social media to express their frustration with Ubisoft, citing concerns with how these Digits will be monetized and implemented within its titles.

The publisher describes each Digit as "a unique collectible that features its own serial number for others to see in-game." Ubisoft plans on monitoring and managing these NFTs through Ubisoft Quartz, a new platform designed specifically to track Digits. "With Digits, items are no longer bound to a player’s game inventory since they can be put on sale for other eligible players to acquire outside of the Ubisoft ecosystem," writes Ubisoft. At the time of writing, the announcement trailer for Ubisoft Quartz currently sat at 876 likes to over 16,000 dislikes before it was consequently delisted.

NFTs have been a popular point of conversation around the internet in recent months. Achieved via blockchain technology, non-fungible tokens allow for some form of ownership of entirely virtual items. Originally popular with artists looking to sell digital copies of their creations, NFTs are slowly being implemented into video games as developers begin to craft unique cosmetics with the technology.

Despite the surge in popularity, NFTs remain a controversial topic. The process needed to create an NFT is incredibly bad for the environment, requiring an exorbitant amount of power to create. Ubisoft reassured games that the process used to develop Digits is "energy-efficient" and "environmentally sustainable."

As for Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, the game launched in 2019 to middling reviews. Critics lamented its poorly structured gameplay mechanics which clashed with its live service elements. The NFTs players will be able to unlock in-game will take the form of unique gun skins and armor pieces. While these will be cosmetically different, it's unlikely that Ubisoft will tie specific mechanic boosts to the items.

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Its NFT features will only be available on the PC version of the game.
