Evidently, Superman & Lois' Tyler Hoechlin was always The CW's clear choice to play Superman -- because no one else was asked to try out beyond him.

Reflecting on his original Supergirl audition process to Men's Health, Hoechlin explained, "One of my agents called me and said, 'Hey, I think I might know what your meeting's about.' And they sent me this article that they were looking to cast Superman, and I was like, 'Okay, maybe… Who knows?'" After a half-hour of auditioning with Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, the duo told him, "'We're looking to do this. Is that something you'd be interested in?' And I said, 'Yeah, sure. Let's talk about it!' We just talked about the character, what we found interesting about him, and it was just that one meeting."

What surprised Hoechlin later on was that Berlanti and Kreisberg didn't evaluate any other actors following their conversation. "I found out later through them that, apparently, that was the only meeting they took for the character," he continued, "so they apparently saw something [in me]."

Hoechlin first debuted as Clark Kent and Superman in Supergirl's Season 2 premiere following its network transfer from CBS to the CW, marking the Man of Steel's first supporting cast appearance on the show. Following the show's Season 2 finale, he appeared on 2018's "Elseworlds" crossover alongside Elizabeth Tulloch in her first Lois Lane appearance, then returned for the 2019-2020 "Crisis on Infinite Earths" event, where Clark and Lois tried to help the Arrowverse heroes and Paragons save their multiverse from the Anti-Monitor. This involved searching the multiverse for alternate Supermen who could provide assistance, such as Tom Welling's Smallville Clark Kent and Brandon Routh once again playing Superman following 2006's Superman Returns.

Superman & Lois follows Clark, Lois and their twin sons, Jonathan and Jordan, as they return to Clark's hometown of Smallville following his mother's death. It was recently announced that Superman & Lois' first season will receive a Blu-Ray and DVD release on October 19, two months after the show debuts on HBO Max.

Superman & Lois airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
