Hollywood has a battle of the Greek demigods brewing.
We've written a lot about Brett Ratner's upcoming film Hercules: The Thracean War, which stars Dwayne Johnson in the title role, but that's not the only film in the works based on the mythological hero. Cliffhanger and 12 Rounds director Renny Harlin is also getting in on the action with his own film, Hercules 3D for Nu Image and Millennium.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Harlin and company have made a solid step toward securing a specific audience by hiring Twilight alum Kellan Lutz for the title role. Lutz also played Poseidon in Immortals and has lined up starring roles in a motion-capture Tarzan film, and Tatua, by comics creators Paul Jenkins and Rob Prior.
"It takes more than a good physique to portray the most legendary, mythological personality in history — and Kellan has exactly that, personality," Harlin said. "He's not afraid to explore the strengths and vulnerabilities of the character, and he impressed me with his passion and heart."
Harlin wrote the script with Sean Hood (Conan the Barbarian) and producer Giulio Steve. While the details are being kept under wraps, rumor has it that the story will revolve around Hercules falling in love with a princess from Crete. The film is expected to debut in March of 2014.
