It’s always sad when a series is about to come to its end, and The Walking Dead has recently joined the club. The one good thing about the prospect of seeing the last episode is to have closure where the characters are concerned. With a series like The Walking Dead where characters come and go so fast, this is doubly important.

Now that it’s confirmed that Season 11 will be the final one, fans have started making their wish lists over a number of things they want to see. A significant desire is to see certain characters return for the finale, while a few others need to stay gone.

10 Return: Morgan Jones

Morgan in Walking Dead

The series began with Morgan saving Rick’s life, thereby kickstarting the entire events of the story. He’s ventured into Fear the Walking Dead, but in the main series, his absence has never been addressed following the time skip.

With Morgan’s role being instrumental in starting everything off, it would be fitting for him to return in the finale. It’s not known what’s happened to him within the chronological timeline, as Fear the Walking Dead is set in the past. Bringing Morgan back would establish where he ended up and round things off.

9 Stay Gone: Dwight

Dwight in Walking Dead

It’s been agreed that the Saviors are a better group than the Whisperers due to the former having many generals. And yet, Dwight was far from a reliable man for Negan, and his constant flip-flopping between good and bad made him a frustrating character.

His jump into Fear the Walking Dead has revitalized interest in him for his personal arc, and that’s just about as good as it’ll get for him.

8 Return: Heath

Heath in Walking Dead

It seems as if fans will never know whatever became of this guy, as it’s been more than three years since his disappearance and not one person has addressed his absence. The showrunners claimed Heath was taken by the Scavengers, yet that group has died out and Heath was nowhere to be seen.

His return in the Rick Grimes films doesn’t feel justified, because Heath is relevant to Alexandria and not the outside world. He can be brought for the finale as a reference toward the struggles the characters went through, with Heath returning after years and revealing all the tribulations he had to endure to return home.

7 Stay Gone: Guillermo

Guillermo walking dead

Being a character who wasn’t derived from the comics, it makes sense why it was so easy to write off Guillermo and the rest of the people at the home for the elderly. The curiosity of his status was ended when the showrunners revealed that Guillermo and his people were eventually killed by walkers.

In case of a retcon, it would still be too cheesy of an ending to bring Guillermo back for the last episode and reveal that he and his people were all right the whole time and were now reunited with the main characters.

6 Return: Glenn Rhee

Glenn on The Walking Dead

Fans hoped that one of the ways to bring Maggie Rhee back would be through flashbacks showing her time with Glenn. While that didn’t pan out, Glenn can still return in flashback form for the last episode. After all, he’s responsible for saving Rick’s life just like Morgan.

Similar to Rick’s fantasy in the Season 7 finale where Glenn was alive, the finale can show him in some shape or form to solidify how this would be the last episode. An appearance from Glenn, especially one where Maggie can reach closure, would fulfill the fans’ wishes.

5 Stay Gone: Hershel Green

TWD Quiz Hershel

Like Glenn, there was hope to see Hershel back in a fantasy or flashback. This wish did come true in Rick’s last episode, where he hallucinated Hershel’s return and was able to ask for forgiveness for his death. Overall, this appearance was good enough to give fans closure.

There’s really no need for another reference toward Hershel as his chapter has been closed in every way. The show has already given him a respectable farewell, making an appearance in the finale unneeded, and given that actor Scott Wilson has unfortunately died, bringing him back may be in bad taste.

4 Return: Michonne

Michonne The Walking Dead Featured

There have been a number of theories over Michonne’s future storylines. While these would be awesome if played out, Michonne’s next appearance can be kept as a treat for fans in the finale. Interestingly, she had a similar send-off in the comics where Michonne re-emerged after a long gap.

It appears as if fans won’t be seeing Michonne at any point in the near future, what with the character only recently departing. Since the final episode is the end, it would be a disservice if we don’t see her once again.

3 Stay Gone: Shane Walsh

Jon Bernthal Shane Walsh The Walking Dead

Shane was another character whose initial ending felt far too soon, as he was responsible for the most entertaining and even the scariest episodes in the series. For years, the speculation was that Rick hadn’t moved on from his death, which was confirmed when Shane returned as a hallucination in Rick’s final appearance.

Like Hershel, this was a fitting conclusion for this character. Besides, Negan has taken on the role of the main villain/anti-hero of the series, and fans have turned their interest toward him while moving on from Shane. He’s got his ending already and there’s no valid reason for him to be in the finale.

2 Return: Rick Grimes

Rick Grimes in Walking Dead

The main character himself, whose point of view was shown for almost nine seasons, can’t simply have his last appearance in that helicopter. Andrew Lincoln nailed every mannerism of Rick Grimes, making him the go-to character for fans, many of whom still have hopes for his return.

It doesn’t have to be an actual appearance from Rick, with even archive footage showing his journey at the beginning of the series good enough for fans. It’s hard to think that Rick won’t ever show up in the TV show, so the finale needs to bring an image of him back for old times’ sake.

1 Stay Gone: Jadis

Jadis WALKING Dead

One of the characters who outlived her importance a long time ago, Jadis was kept around for no real reason and to the chagrin of many viewers. She was written off the show to transition into the Rick Grimes movies, and that’s where she should be left off.

Jadis simply never connected as a character, as her presence was unnecessary to the story. It wouldn’t make any difference if she were to come back for the finale, and it’s not believable that anyone in-universe would care if she did return.
