The television world is a fast-moving one with many different moving parts and multiple chances to go wrong. An overwhelming majority of TV shows will finish filming one season without even knowing for sure if they're going to have another season and, even if a new season is approved, that doesn't ensure that production can begin right away. If a show can't be made at a consistent pace, people can lose interest entirely and go on to another show. The era of binge-watching shows on streaming has only exacerbated these risks, with people getting through shows faster than ever before and becoming restless about when their favorite stories can continue.

With all of the different ways that a television production can go wrong, it's always a treat to see a TV show last for five, ten, and even more years. It's even better, and increasingly rare, to see the same actor portray the same character in a show for years or even decades on end.

Columbo, the detective drama, followed the astute, yet inelegant, homicide detective as he pieced together and solved innumerable murder cases. The show was fairly groundbreaking for the mystery genre, in that mystery was one of the components that this show lacked.

At the start of each episode, the audience was shown who the culprit was, and the drama lay in how Columbo would put the facts together before the end. It's an interesting format, and it worked extremely well, with the show running from 1968 all the way up to 2003, with Peter Falk playing the titular detective for every episode.

Who these three men were would change over time for a number of reasons, however, one character remained consistent throughout the show's run. The show ran from 1973 all the way to 2010 and featured Peter Sallis playing as Norman Clegg, for all 37 years.
