From Toy Story to Luca, Pixar Animation Studios has released heartwarming stories that cover various inspirations, cultures and genres. Their next big-screen adventure, Turning Red, looks to be continuing that trend by tackling growing up and finding an identity in a hilarious way. Its latest trailer also showcases a hilarious meme being used to drive home the film's premise and main character.

Turning Red follows a young girl named Mei who lives a life of freedom with her closest friends. She believes in doing whatever she wants and looking and dressing however she desires. However, a family legacy turns Mei into a giant red panda when she's stressed out. Of course, this occurs when she is in her teens and is at the point where she will be transitioning into an adult. As a result, the film takes the idea of growing up to a whole new level.

NSYNC's "It's Gonna Be Me" is heard throughout the trailer, especially when Mei's red panda form is revealed. The song is the perfect transition from the girls gushing over an in-universe boy band called 4-Town. But it also brings up the classic "It's gonna be May" meme that appeared in 2012.

The meme was first released on Tumblr and features Justice Timberlake and his now infamous delivery of the song's title to announce that the month of May is coming. Because of how he sounds when singing the song, untrained ears will likely hear "May" instead of the intended "me." Since its reveal, the meme has reached legend status among internet users, and its inclusion in Turning Red gives the song a whole new context.

While May has nothing to do with the song, hearing Timberlake say the line when Mei is a red panda showcases the level of importance placed on her throughout the film. At first, it represents that she is the one who has been chosen to turn into the animal being when audiences see her in the mirror. But, even more clever is how his pronunciation of "me" sounds exactly like the main character's name.

The phrase is heard two more times in the Turning Red trailer, and each time, it shows how Mei goes from being chosen for a gift she didn't want to love her change and the person she's become. Ultimately, the song-turned-meme feels like a call to action for Mei to find herself and, by the end, becomes an empowering anthem for the character. But even though the catchy and iconic tune is an excellent fit for the trailer, it's hard not to acknowledge the hilarity that comes with knowing the meme.

Turning Red arrives in theaters on March 11, 2022.
